The NGH Report – American Idol 8’s Top 5 Results: “Thank You, Kalamazoo!”

by Joseph Banks -- 04/30/2009
Matt Giraud’s nine lives finally ran out this week on American Idol, and Joseph shares his opinion about that. Of course, he also has his thoughts on the rest of the show, including the whole situation with Adam picking the group he was supposed to be in and then ending up in the bottom two.

Let me just make the point of saying that if next week doesn’t have two songs for each contestant, I will freak out. This week was amazing, but it could have been even better if we had some more performances. Yes, I’m still very bitter about this.

The results episode was pretty straight and to the point and American Idol tried to “shock” us by letting us think that it was possible that Adam Lambert might be eliminated. I didn’t buy it. The moment I saw Matt Giraud in the bottom three, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind that my prediction would come true.

So, let’s talk a little bit about our most recent fallen contestant…

Matt Giraud – Well, the “cat with nine lives” has finally been put to sleep. I’ve always enjoyed Matt’s soulful renditions, and to this day I maintain the belief that Matt would have been a very marketable winner. We’ll see if a label will pick him up and allow him to make a record. Matt’s fatal flaw was never truly gaining an image. Every week he showed America that you didn’t have to be the best week after week; you had to just be better than one person week after week. This strategy took him to fifth place, which is not a bad showing for a dueling piano player with very little “main stage” experience. Kudos.

Now, on to some observations!

  1. I’ve run out of jokes for the cheesy entrances that try to make this competition into the battle for Troy. Oh, wait, there’s one.
  2. 47 million votes!
  3. I would just like to note that Randy was dressed in a floral plum-colored button up shirt.
  4. The Ford commercial was relatively painless, wasn’t it?
  5. The choreography that accompanied tonight’s medley was simply having the contestants slowly make their way towards the stage behind the judges. That was it. They walked forward… in rhythm. I guess they needed a break after last week?
  6. Hey, quick question! Why was Danny Gokey wrestling with a 17-year-old girl covered in frosting?
  7. So, let me get this straight. We can’t finish this show on time this season, but we have time for a cake cooking montage? Really?
  8. Oh, Adam. I’m so glad you picked a side! It’s always so boring when people try to “be civil” and refuse to pick a group. I mean, you’re on a reality show, right? Let’s make some drama!
  9. Adam had to be practically dragged to the bottom three. If he had claws he would have been gripping onto the floor.
  10. Danny and Allison shared the best “WTF” look I have ever seen on this program.
  11. Natalie Cole was classy.
  12. Taylor Hicks’ harmonica solo was amazing!
  13. I love how excited Taylor was to see Simon applaud his performance.
  14. How pissed do you think Matt was when he realized he was in the bottom two and his only chance of survival was if by some weird universal fluke ADAM FREAKIN LAMBERT had to have received fewer votes than him? Hahaha, hilarious.
  15. 15. When did Jamie Foxx become Kanye West?

See you next week!
