We’ll Be the Judge of That! – American Idol 9, March 9, Part 2

by Tyler Sandersfeld -- 03/10/2010
Normally, our Foxes On Idol judging panel sit at the same virtual table and render their opinions. For Tuesday’s performance, technical difficulties split them up. You’ve already seen David’s thoughts on the ladies – what did judge Tyler have to say about the ladies? For example, why did he have a hard time remembering who Katelyn (right) even was?

The ladies performed on Tuesday night, and Foxes On Idol judge David provided his thoughts earlier. You’ve also certainly seen Jenn’s recap. So between all of that, you know what Randy, Ellen, Kara, Simon, Jenn, and David had to say. Technical difficulties prevented Tyler from registering his opinions right away, but those have been resolved and our judge takes his slightly-belated seat at the table.

Katie Stevens, "Breakaway"

Tyler: Sigh. Haven't these posers learned anything about singing a previous Idol's songs? That's exactly what Katie sounded like this week: a poser. I'm not sure whether the casual mistiming of the notes was intentional or not, but I disliked it anyway. It's a shame, too, since Katie clearly has a great voice. But she has no artistry whatsoever. Katie better hope her high level of previous exposure and the story about her grandmother are enough for the voters, because this performance wasn't. 5.

Siobhan Magnus, "House of the Rising Sun"

Tyler: At last, someone sang this song that I absolutely love, and thank goodness that it was Siobhan. We've heard her do haunting and big before, but this was both. It was absolutely beautiful and it solidified Siobhan as a dark horse, perhaps even a front runner. Sorry, Simon, but I have to disagree with you wholly. 8.

Lacey Brown, "The Story"

Tyler: I have never heard of this song before, so I have no idea whether she was on or off and I can't make any real critical comments. It sounded pretty good to me, but considering her last two performances, I'm not sure this unmemorable song choice saved her. Too bad, too, since this was quite good. 7.

Katelyn Epperly, "I Feel the Earth Move"

Tyler: I don't know what the judges were thinking. Carole did a great job with this song. Oh... wait, this was Katelyn. Silly me. This was such a carbon copy that I thought the original artist hijacked the stage. Since I heard more Carole King than Katelyn Epperly, I can't really give this a score. N/A.

Didi Benami, "Rhiannon"

Tyler: I still don't care about Didi very much, but at least this performance opened her up to me. She sounded very nice indeed, if not go-out-and-buy-the-album amazing. I think she'll move forward, so she'll have the chance to amaze us. I think she may have it in her yet. 7.

Paige Miles, "Smile"

Tyler: Charlie Chaplin? Really? Who is this Paige Miles character? Is she a rocker with soul? Is she a torch balladeer? Is she a singer with a voice thinner than a sheet of parchment paper? Is she cannon fodder? I don't know, and I don't care. Pack your bags, Paige. 4.

Crystal Bowersox, "Give Me One Reason"

Tyler: Is this woman the favorite or what? Even if this was her weakest performance of the semifinals, it would be like saying East of Eden was James Dean's weakest film. Whether this was her weakest or not, it was a great vocal with great soul and great guitar work. 9.

Lilly Scott, "I Fall to Pieces"

Tyler: I like quirky little Lilly, so I'm glad she went last. Was it the best performance of the night? Not really. Was it good? Um, yeah. Perhaps it was just a little too normal for what we're used to from Lilly, but with the mandolin and a good vocal, I don't think anyone will care. 7.5.

Final Thoughts

Tyler: Going into this week, I thought Lacey was a goner who got to perform again just for the heck of it. Her song choice may still send her packing, but the performance may have saved her in this weak season. Paige, on the other hand, sealed her fate with a smile. Crystal and Lilly were too good and too late into the episode to be in any real jeopardy. I think Didi has enough fans to stick around as well. That means the second girl going home will be among Lacey, show-starter Katie, and Carole... I mean, Katelyn. Maybe even Siobhan in a shocker, but I don't think so (or don't want to). It should be Katie, but I fear that my fellow Iowan lost herself too much to advance, so I predict Katelyn joins Paige in the "missed it by that much" category.
