I’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 5, July 29by Terri Smith -- 07/30/2009
View Printable version of this article Readers! We’re at our top 6! I remember when it took a whole minute to get through all the dancer introductions. Now we’re only weeks away from the finale and there are so few of them! We have six wonderful dancers, and while they aren’t the most diverse bunch (four contemporary, a ballet, and a ballroom), they’re all wonderfully talented. I’m excited for the potential awesomeness in store and am wishing we don’t have any colossal train wrecks. Before the dancing’s even begun, I put Melissa at the bottom for the girls and I’m leaning more toward Evan being at the bottom for the boys. Needless to say, though, everybody needs to have a great night if he or she wants to make it to the final four. I hope everyone’s brought their A-game, because I’m ready to judge. If you haven’t read Jenn’s recap yet, go ahead and do that. For those of you all caught up, let’s get it on! The Fellas – Jazz
I love watching the rehearsal footage because it shows how close the dancers got through the whole process and I get to see their inside jokes. The routine itself was really great. I actually had the same concern Lil C did about Evan getting swallowed up by Brandon and Ade because they’re both so powerful and so similar. A lot of people are wondering why Evan’s still here and saying that he’s not as good as the rest of the dancers. This routine was a big “shut up” to them. I thought each of them did a really great job. At the very beginning, I hated that Ade was off-center during those beginning walks with the tight shoulders, but he did a good job of correcting himself during that pass. It also blows my mind how strong Brandon dances. I understand that Ade and Evan are physically strong because they can lift and they great heights on jetés and other jumps, but you can see every muscle in Brandon’s body when he dances, and that’s so great to watch. While my Dance heart beats only for Evan, all three of them did a great job, each having moments where they stood out in a positive way, and no one sticking out in a negative way. Awesome start to the show, I’ll say!
Jeanine & Ade – samba These two definitely have some sexy to them, so this should be good. My love for this routine came and went throughout the whole thing. I thought the beginning looked strong and had a lot of potential, but when the fast steps happened, it became a hot mess. Their feet were the big issue. I know jack about ballroom dancing, but their footwork didn’t have any sort of style or punch to it – it looked like they just ran and stopped, ran and stopped. Ade’s feet bugged me a ton, but his carriage is great. Jeanine got way into the sexiness of this dance and that was really fun, that and she looked way hot (I said that before Lil C). I didn’t get the same appeal from Ade because he had three faces during this routine: concentrating, cheesy smile, and pursed lips. Whenever he faced the front, there was the cheesy smile, when the dancing didn’t have a lot of steps, he had the pursed lips, and he concentrated when there were lots of steps. This looked like a really hard routine, but this wasn’t great. Jeanine did “really good” and Ade did “alright.” They have another routine and solos so I’m not worried. Kayla – solo Good song… This was significantly better than her solo from last week. I wish there were stuff going on that I could actually, you know, judge but I’ll try. She has excellent extension, but I wish she’d do leaps or slow extensions to show off her legs. I think the voting audience has really come around to her, I’m glad for her since she seems like a sweet girl. She’s getting a lot better at connecting to her music, though, so it’s good for her to show off that growth. Not amazing, but good. Melissa & Evan – Broadway Is it bad that I was immediately relieved that this wasn’t a Joey Dowling routine? This had awesome cheesiness written all over it from the word go! I knew it was going to be good just from listening to Evan and Melissa talk about their characters and what they’re doing, I could tell them were committed to it, and that’s what makes great Broadway routines. The whole thing was UH-MAZING. UH. MAZING. I actually yelled at Lil C after he started talking and ended up fast-forwarding the last third of his comments. What wasn’t there? What was mediocre about this number? If Broadway’s just not your thing, fine. If you think Evan and/or Melissa should be eliminated, fine. But if you wanted to love this routine and didn’t, I want to know why. I promise I will have calmed down and will constructively talk it out with you. I had a slight concern of Melissa looking somewhat out-hammed by Evan. She was a wee bit, but when you think about it, she’s the prissy bride so it kinda worked. This was Evan’s dance and he ran with it, but they looked excellent together. The height on their jeté out of the chané was the exact same, they hit together, and they had great interaction. This catered to my inner dance/theatre nerd and I absolutely loved it. And before you ask, I will set an alarm so Evan gets to our Dance wedding on time. Swoon! Ade – solo Much better! I’m not the biggest fan of Ade’s self-choreography, which is fine. What I loved was that this looked much more controlled than his solos in the past. He wasn’t manic the whole time just waiting until he can do a flip. His split-leap had beautiful height and extension and if you couldn’t see during his pirouette, he turned six times. That takes an incredible center of gravity to pull that off! His dancing actually looked like it had some sort of meaning. Beautiful! 1 2 3 4 Next-->View Printable version of this article
