American Idol 8 Contestants to Watch from New York & San Juan

by David Bloomberg -- 02/02/2009
American Idol went to New York and Puerto Rico, combining them into one show. We saw nine contestants who made it through to Hollywood, but how many of them will actually make it beyond that point? David is here to provide his thoughts and predictions.

I’m a little late with the third episode of the week, but Idol didn’t check my schedule before adding a Thursday show. Let’s get to the auditioners.

I’d like to start the last day of auditions by doing something I don’t usually do – talking about a contestant who didn’t make it. Adeola Adegoke was so bad and so, well, stupid to quit her job. And the thing is that even if she had made it to Hollywood, how did she plan to support herself between the audition and heading out? Did she think those who were passed through left immediately or something? Clueless in so many ways.

Jorge Nuñez put my high school Spanish to the test – and I failed. But even if I could only understand five words of his first song (“I did it my way,” which he sang in English), he had a really smooth voice. I was surprised, as his intro segment led me to believe he was going to, well, suck – what with his “I sing with my heart” comment. I think he could do well and probably will make it through Hollywood.

Melinda Camille wants to uplift humanity, but not wear clothes. The two may go hand in hand for some people! Even out in public and in this audition, there are obviously certain items of underclothing that she chooses not to bother with (see photo at the top of this article if you need a hint). I agree with Randy that she has a “nice” voice. It was pleasant, but nothing really special. I don’t think she’ll make it through Hollywood.

Jackie Tohn didn’t pick a very good song to show off her voice and she was lucky Simon had her sing a second one. I think she can be very versatile, which will help if she makes it to the finals. The big question is: Will she? The answer is: I think she actually might. Her combination of voice and personality may carry her through.

Nick Mitchell (aka Norman Gentle) was obviously a comedy routine rather than a singer. He was somewhat entertaining and I can see how some of the judges, bored or annoyed by the number of bad performers they have to plow through, enjoyed him enough to put him through to Hollywood. I have to say, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Ryan Seacrest so surprised at a contestant coming out of the audition with a golden ticket. However, I think Kara was right – he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell.

In the quick-shots, where we only saw a few seconds of three auditioners, Ashley Hollister sounded good, not great. I liked the tone of Kenny Hoffpauer’s voice. Kendall Beard will blend in with the other blondes with okay voices. No official predictions, though.

Monique Garcia Torres didn’t need her little brother to keep his fingers crossed during her audition – she just needed him to be there and be cute! Honestly, I don’t think Simon and Paula would have put her through otherwise (heck, Simon even told her to thank him). She has a lot of work to do in remaking herself to show the judges that she can be more contemporary, and I just don’t think she’ll be able to do it – she won’t make it through Hollywood.

Patricia Lewis Roman didn’t start out that great, in my opinion, but I thought she kicked it up a notch – and then back down again. I agree with the judges that it was a poor song choice. The slower Spanish song showed her voice off a bit better, and I was surprised that Paula (Paula!) said no. I was also surprised the producers didn’t end the episode on a higher note, as they usually do. She’s going to have to work hard to make it through Hollywood. She might, but I don’t think she’ll make the finals.

Next time, we’ll be in Hollywood. But before that, I will bring you another article looking back at all my predictions, summarizing them, and maybe even re-evaluating some of the early ones in light of what we saw later. Check back for it!
