American Idol 8 Contestants to Watch from Jacksonville

by David Bloomberg -- 01/28/2009
Anne Marie Boskovich (right) was sent out to remake herself and came back to be the final contestant shown in the Jacksonville auditions. We all know the show likes to end on a high note, but how high can Ann Marie’s note be – will she make it to the finals? And what about the other Hollywood-bound auditioners we saw? How far will they go?

Joshua Ulloa definitely has personality and a decent voice to boot. But the gimmicks won’t work once he gets to Hollywood, and I think there are those with better voices who will beat him out at that point. He won’t make it through.

Sharon Wilbur had too many squeaks – I was actually a bit surprised that she made it through. She won’t make it past the Hollywood rounds, though. And her little dog, too!

Much like Simon, I expected Julissa Veloz to be a laughable audition, but was pleasantly surprised to hear the voice that came out of her. She has personality and a half-decent voice – though I have to agree with the judges about her annoying laugh. I also think she didn’t necessarily advance based on her voice, but on the way she reacted to Paula walking out. She is another one who I don’t think will make it past Hollywood.

Jasmine Murray was pretty good, though I thought she was a bit too nasally. I’m not sure she will have a wide enough range to succeed. I’m betting she won’t make it out of Hollywood, but I could see it as a possibility. Call this one “iffy.”

T.K. Hash did overdo things a bit, but I thought he was pretty good. Indeed, he was the first one in Jacksonville I feel has a decent shot at making it through Hollywood (though not the only one – see below). Let me take this opportunity to go off on a bit of a tangent and note that it is funny how so many people want to sing “Imagine” but avoid the first couple verses of the song, singing about imagining no heaven or religion and nothing to kill or die for. To me, if you’re going to sing a song and embrace it’s message, you have to embrace its whole message. But maybe that’s just me.

Anne Marie Boskovich definitely has a great voice – I could tell that when she sang just snippets of Kara’s song, and then she proved it when she did her actual audition. She will make it through Hollywood. Beyond that, I’m not sure if she can make the finals – a lot will depend on how much she perks up her personality so she doesn’t fade into the background, and of course on how much more TV time she gets while in Hollywood. She doesn’t really have a back story, so that will go against her, but she could still pull through. And besides, she’s pretty hot, which never hurts.

Now that I’m done talking about the Jacksonville contestants, let me take this opportunity to say that I listened to Joanna Pacitti’s album, This Crazy Life (released under the name of just “Joanna”). I mentioned in my article last week that I had ordered it, and I received it yesterday. I’ve only given it one listen so far, but it has a few pretty good moments. It’s certainly a pop record and I could see how it faded away among so many other such CDs being released. But the first song, “Let It Slide,” stuck in my head almost right away. I’ll give it a few more listens to see what I think. As I mentioned, I think she’ll make the finals. But she’ll need to do something to stand out more than just being a generic pop singer. We’ll see how she does.
