It’s the holiday season, and that means Idols abound on the holiday charts. For the fifth year in a row, Season 2’s Kimberley Locke has a holiday song on the Adult Contemporary Chart, this year’s selection being “We Need a Little Christmas.” The song entered the AC chart last week at #20, and is #21 on this week’s edition.

Other Idols with holiday songs on this week’s charts include Carrie Underwood’s duet with Elvis (“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”), which is #14 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and #54 on Hot Country Songs, and Josh Gracin’s “Telluride,” which is #58 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks.

New Idol Music

Season 1 winner, Kelly Clarkson is back with her fourth album, due out March 17. The first single, “My Life Would Suck Without You,” will be released to radio January 19.

Season 6’s Melinda Doolittle’s first CD, Coming Back to You, drops February 3. Her single, “It’s Your Love,” will be out January 20.

Meanwhile, the release date for Taylor Hicks’ new CD, as yet untitled, has been pushed back to March. Taylor is currently on the road with the musical Grease in which he appears as Teen Angel.

Bo Bice has a track on a Time Life special, Gone Country, ‘70s Rock. Bo contributes his rendition of Rush’s “Closer to the Heart.”

Season 7’s Amanda Overmyer has gone the indie route rather than hold out for a major label deal. Her debut, Solidify, which is available through her web site, is outstanding. It has a slight country rock edge, but with a more contemporary feel. There isn’t a bad track on the album! You can listen to clips from the album or order downloads here. Check it out.

Idol Albums on the Charts

Nothing new on the charts this week, which means all the existing releases jockeyed for position on the Billboard 200. This is good news for David Cook, whose self-titled debut sold 104,000 copies in its fourth week to keep him in the top ten (#10). The album remains on the Top Internet Albums (7) and Top Rock Albums (4) charts.

Hits Daily Double is predicting that Cook’s album will sell an additional 125,000 to 130,000 this last week before Christmas, and could end up in the top ten for the fifth week in a row. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA and has sold around 580,000 copies to date.

In its fifth week out, David Archuleta’s debut, which sold another 59,000, slips from #19 to #21 on the Billboard 200. David’s album is #20 on Top Internet Albums. Archuleta is approaching the 500,000 mark with 430,000 copies sold to date.

Carrie Underwood’s Carnival Ride had another strong week, moving up three spots to #50 on the Billboard 200. The album holds at #9 on Top Country Albums.

Kellie Pickler’s sales were also up, pushing her self-titled album up one spot to #140 on the Billboard 200. It is #28 on Top Country Albums.

Jennifer Hudson drops from #72 to #81 on the Billboard 200, and from #14 to #17 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Daughtry is up seven spots to #104 on the Billboard 200. The album is #21 on Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums, and #14 on Top Hard Rock Albums.

Jordin Sparks, which reentered the Billboard 200 last week at #199, inched up eight spots to #191 on this week’s edition. Jordin is getting close to the million mark with sales totaling 971,000 over the album’s 54 weeks on the charts.

Mandisa’s True Beauty CD is #39 on Top Christian Albums, and #43 on Top Christian and Gospel Albums.

Kudos to Elliott Yamin, whose My Kind of Holiday sold 2,700 copies, and while it didn’t hit the charts, it has racked up 11,000 copies to date. His first album is now gold, selling a total of 518,000 copies to date.

Season 7’s Kristy Lee Cook was the first of that season’s artists to release an album, and now has become the first from her class to be dropped by her label, Arista Nashville. Kristy Lee’s album, Why Wait, was released in September 2008, and has sold around 25,000 copies to date.

Kristy Lee had been signed to Arista Nashville in 2001. Prior to that, she had been with BMI. Neither label released an album for her, and her indie album, Devoted, was released in 2006.
