I’ll Be the Judge of That! – Dancing With the Stars 7, September 29by Terri Smith -- 09/30/2008
View Printable version of this article I’m excited for rumba and paso doble night! These are my two favorite dances, so I feel like I’m in for a treat. I’m not sure how some of the couples will do with rumbas, but we’ll have to see who gets which dances before we worry about that. Let’s get it on! Toni Braxton & Alec Mazo Her body moved well, even though her arms still need work. If she relaxes her shoulders, her arms won’t look as tense. My issue with her tonight was her face. She looked like she was taking a calculus exam the whole time. I know it’s a lot to think about, but this slow dance really exposed what she shows on her face. I agree with the judges that she needs to work on her transitions between moves also. She clearly went through Edyta’s closet for the panty-and-teddy outfit, but she’s beautiful so I can’t knock her. Brooke Burke & Derek Hough Yeah, I thought this was just okay for her (which is spectacular in comparison to her competition). She looked really uncomfortable through most of it, but I wonder if her trying to make her movements strong just translated into looking stiff. I like her in faster routines more than this. She looked gorgeous and her lines were really beautiful in places. We found Brooke’s weakness, though. She needs to work on showing power without looking awkward. Rocco DiSpirito & Karina Smirnoff Rocco’s promos always make me hungry… Judging guys doing rumbas is always really tough because the girl is the one being showcased, so I wanted to look at Karina the whole time (since she looked like she was enjoying herself!). Anyway, knowing that Rocco truly didn’t do a whole lot, I thought he did okay; better than the foxtrot, not as good as the mamba. He framed Karina really well while she moved around him, but Carrie Ann was right that his musicality was poor so it made for some awkward moments. I think he has a good attitude toward it all, even though the food metaphors are ridiculous. As long as he stays willing to learn, hopefully he’ll improve. Lance Bass & Lacey Schwimmer I hate this song… I went through the whole routine not knowing what I thought about it. I knew Len would hate it but I didn’t anticipate him being just plain pissy (I said that before Bruno!). It was a cute idea, but I wasn’t thrilled with the whole thing. I liked the stuff that looked more like the traditional paso, so maybe I just prefer that style not being completely modernized. As far as his actual dancing went, Lance did really well with the holds and steps, but his posture definitely came and went throughout the dance. Arguably, this was part of their choreography but it does violate paso rules so I’ll let you decide if it was good or bad. I know I loved the Chap Stick at the end. Ah, Lance and his wit. I’m jealous that Lacey gets to make out with Lance so much, too. Kim Kardashian & Mark Ballas This could be awesome, or it could really suck… For the beginning, I was just staring at the TV waiting for something to happen. I knew pretty early in that this wasn’t going to be awesome, but then I just hoped it’d be better than the mambo. She struggled with this one a lot with both the steps and the character. Carrie Ann’s suggestion was great and Kim should watch the video of the whole episode so she can see what she looks likes. All of her movements appeared weak; arms, hips, and legs. She needs to put more energy into her dancing and I don’t really know what’s going to get that out of her. I appreciate that she’s trying her best, though. Misty May-Treanor & Maxim Chmerkovskiy Misty was awesome in her holds! When they danced closely and she had Maxim to hold on to, she was powerful, but her force looked more checked. The side-by-side choreography was a bit manic but I chalk that up as nerves and being carried by the music. She needed to do something with her face (my comment, which I said before Len did) and she needed to put her shoulders down (Carrie Ann’s comment). These things will keep her from looking robotic while she dances. Maxim, I get your whole tough love thing, but you need to be nice to your partners sometimes. While you are smokin’ hot, you really can come off as a tool. Maurice Greene & Cheryl Burke I thought I was going to be watching Maurice get down and dirty like he always does, but I was impressed by his ballroom carriage. His posture and his holds were beautiful! I know it wasn’t a scorching hot sex dance, which is a negative considering that’s what the rumba really is, but one must keep in mind she’s in her low 20s and I’m willing to bet that Maurice is in his mid-40s. It didn’t look like Maurice had a lot of footwork to deal with, but I wonder if he just couldn’t pick up on it in time for the performance. I liked it better than the judges did, but it didn’t blow my mind or anything. 1 2 Next-->View Printable version of this article
