Idol Chartwatch, August 27: David Archuleta “Crushes” the Competition!

by Donna Reynolds -- 08/27/2008
The Season 7 runner-up had an outstanding week on the charts, challenging long-standing Idol chart records. Read on for more on David Archuleta and the rest of the Idols on this week’s charts.

David Archuleta’s “Crush” has broken into the Billboard Hot 100 in a big way. The single, which actually made its chart debut last week on the Pop 100 chart, sits at #2 this week, becoming the highest new entry on that chart this year and the best debut for any Idol original single that was not performed as part of the show.

Billboard’s Fred Bronson devotes an entire column to runner-up David’s accomplishment, pointing out that the song outranked David Cook’s “The Time of My Life,” which peaked at #3. David Archuleta has now become the second Idol in history to outrank the winner of his season – the first being Clay Aiken’s “This is the Night,” which hit the top spot while Ruben Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings” never went past #2.

“Crush” zoomed up the Pop 100 chart, moving from #63 last week to #12. It also showed up on Pop 100 Airplay (39), Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks (29), and Mainstream Top 40 (40), and was #1 on both Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs. Archie is also popular in Canada where the song is #1 on their Hot 100.

In other new release news, it’s taken a year, but Season 6’s Brandon Rogers has finally released a single. “Broken” shows off Brandon’s smooth, soulful vocals and further emphasizes the fact that he really should have made it farther than 12th place during his season.

Idol Albums

Taylor Hicks’ Early Works failed to make the charts in its first week of release, but not by much. According to Ken Barnes at USA Today, the album sold 2,300 copies. The album that placed at #200 sold 3,000. Although these numbers aren’t chart-busting, considering the physical CD is only available at Target stores, they are respectable.

After slipping fairly significantly last week, all of the top Idol CDs moved up the Billboard 200 this week. Jordin Sparks is up to #71 from #93, Daughtry to #70 from #83, and Carrie Underwood’s Carnival Ride to #38 from #54. Carnival Ride has been “retired” and moves to the Top Country Catalog Albums chart where it debuted at #2.

Chris Sligh’s Running Back to You moved up one spot to #26 on Top Christian Albums and remains at #33 Top Christian and Gospel Albums.

Rounding out the Idol albums on this week’s charts are Josh Gracin and Bucky Covington, both of whom were unmoved on the Top Country Albums chart. Josh Gracin’s We Weren’t Crazy is #53 and Bucky Covington is #48.

Idol Singles

Other than David Archuleta’s triumph, there’s not a lot of excitement on this week’s charts for Idol singles. Kristy Lee Cook’s “15 Minutes of Shame” had a comeback of sorts, moving up from #60 to #46 on Hot Country Songs, and Jennifer Hudson’s “Spotlight” got a nice bound on the Hot 100, moving to #67 from #83 (I heard the song in Old Navy over the weekend).

Jordin Sparks’ “One Step at a Time” is also moving up the charts, overtaking “No Air” on the Hot 100. This is the third hit single from her debut album, and she’s finding a niche for herself in pop music.

David Cook’s “Time of My Life” continues to climb back up the Hot 100, moving to #28 from #36 after nine weeks on the chart. The most significant gains came on the digital charts, though. The song is up 13 spots to #27 on Hot Digital Songs and 12 spots to #25 on Hot Digital Tracks. Upward motion for an Idol single this long after the end of the season is a good thing.
