American Idol 7, April 23 Recap: Good Night and Thank Youby Jenn Brasler -- 04/24/2008
View Printable version of this article Last night our top six Idols sang the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Tonight – you know the drill – one goes home. But first! (Wait, wrong show.) The Idols sing “All I Ask of You,” with the guys singing Raoul’s parts and the girls singing Christine’s parts. Webber plays piano for them. It’s kind of bleh. Their voices don’t blend that well. But Webber was definitely right to make Carly switch from singing this song. Ryan plugs the tour and the songwriting competition before giving us our recap of last night’s “dramatic show.” Webber thinks the six are very talented and all have “got something.” Syesha still bugs the heck out of me but at least gave a pretty good performance of “One Rock and Roll Too Many.” Archuleta polarized people after making “Think of Me” into a pop ballad. I must admit, I liked it. I know, I’m scared, too. Jason almost murdered “Memory,” despite the fact that I threatened to punch anyone who sang it in the face. We get to see Brooke’s annoying restart of “You Must Love Me,” which really bugged me. Carly was awesome on “Superstar,” and David Cook was… well, David Cook on “Music of the Night.” The bored graphics people put Phantom masks over the judges’ faces. Har har.
Ryan asks Webber how singing on stage is different from singing on TV. Webber says you can get away with different mannerisms in theater than you can on TV. Speaking as someone who did tons of musical theater in high school, yep. Musical theater tends to be over-the-top. Webber says that’s why he told Archuleta to open his eyes more. Ryan asks Randy why he thought this would be such a difficult theme. Randy says theater songs are hard to sing and the melodies are so specific that you can’t really move around them. Ryan brings up Brooke’s restart. Webber says that happens to everyone, including the judges, and no matter what happens tonight, Brooke has a future ahead of her. He tells us she was great in her dress rehearsal. Dress rehearsal ain’t what counts, though. Webber admits that he agreed with Simon last night about Jason. Ryan asks Webber the title of the love song he would write for Paula and Simon. Webber suggests “Time to Say Goodbye” or “How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away?” You know, I was dreading him as a mentor, but I thought he turned out to be pretty good. He was definitely the most honest of any mentor we’ve seen on the show. The weekly Ford commercial is to a rocked-out version of “Tainted Love.” Apparently Archuleta is a comic-book artist, and the other Idols are running around doing… something, and then Brooke and David Cook take Archuleta’s pencil away. I’m confused. I’m not recapping the Bushes and their blathering about Idol Gives Back. The Davids are both called out to the stage. I wonder if they’re sick of always being grouped together. I always got sick of being grouped with other people named Jennifer when I was younger. Ryan asks Cook why he didn’t do his own rendition of “Music of the Night.” He says that he didn’t want to be called predictable, and in fact was unpredictable by doing the song as it was written. Archuleta says something about how every week is crazy and he always wants to perform his best. I think he’s really a robot, y’all. Someone just programs him to spit out things like “I will always try my best” and “stay in school, kids” and “my, isn’t this nice weather we’re having?” I guess I’ll stop digressing enough to tell you that the Davids are both safe and get to work with Neil Diamond next week. Lucky them? And just as I expected at some point this season, Leona Lewis will be performing tonight. Yay! Since this week the Idols did musical theater, we revisit some former Idols who have done or currently are on Broadway. Season 3 runner-up Diana DeGarmo was in Hairspray and Season 3 winner Fantasia and last season’s LaKisha were in The Color Purple. Season 1’s Tamyra Gray is currently appearing in Rent, her second Broadway show. Clay Aiken, who I think you may have heard of, is in Spamalot. Tamyra and Clay give us tours of their stages and dressing rooms. Tamyra likes putting away her own stresses and being someone else (she’s playing Mimi). Clay says Broadway is something completely different than anything he’s done before. His next album is out May 6th. Tamyra still gets recognized from American Idol and loves her life. Clay says he’ll keep doing what he’s doing as long as people like it. 1 2 Next-->View Printable version of this article
