American Idol 7: Which Idol Will Fall Fifth?

by Jenn Brasler & David Bloomberg -- 04/08/2008
Jenn and David are back with their predictions for the outcome of this week’s American Idol. Neither predicted that Kristy Lee Cook (right) would be in any danger with Dolly Parton week, but there she was, in her usual place among the bottom three. Will that affect predictions for this week?

Sting is still away, so once again David Bloomberg and I will be giving you our predictions for this week’s American Idol. David will, as always, give his comments in bold, but this week I’ll start things off.

Last week I said that I thought Ramiele would go home, and I was right. I was wrong, however, about who would be with her in the bottom three – I predicted Michael and Syesha, but it turned out to be Kristy and Brooke, the latter of whom made her debut in the bottom three. I think the fact that Kristy was in the bottom three in country week, the week when she should have, by all accounts, been the safest she’s ever been, says a lot. And she knew she was going to be there, too, which means she knows what we should know – no matter how well she performs, she’s not safe.

The one week I didn’t think Kristy would be in the bottom three, she was. So I guess I should keep predicting that she’ll wind up there, since I’ll be right more often than I’ll be wrong. I have no doubt that Brooke had more votes than Kristy last week, and with Ramiele gone, her votes have to go somewhere – Brooke and Carly will most likely split them. This boost will keep Brooke above Kristy, which makes it a safe bet that Kristy won’t be… well, safe.

Do you agree, David? Or is this the week you stop predicting that Kristy will be in the danger zone?

For the reasons Jenn listed above, I am back to predicting Kristy’s doom. As Jenn said, if she couldn’t even succeed on Dolly Parton week, when will she? Also, there is the possibility that the whole Idol Gives Back thing this week may provide more viewers than usual – and they won’t be voting based on loyalty, but rather on the talent they see this week. Given Kristy’s history, it’s unlikely she’ll show any.

With Kristy safely ensconced in her rightful throne, that leaves us with two more seats to fill. With only seven other Idols remaining, the space between safe and in danger grows narrower and narrower every week. I think only two singers are completely safe – the Davids. In fact, I think we’re going to see a David vs. David final two. They might as well have signs on their spots on the couch like Kristy does on the stools.

I’m not completely convinced it will be a finale of Davids – I’m still expecting a surprise or two. But Jenn is right about them being safe this week, without a doubt.

Syesha, Michael, Carly, Brooke, and Jason are left to try to keep themselves out of the bottom three. Michael appears to have pulled himself out of his rut with his performance of “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right,” and as he seems to be listening when the judges tell him what he should and shouldn’t do, I think he’ll be able to keep himself off the stools. Like myself, many people last week thought that Michael shone for the first time since the early rounds of the competition, and his fan base must have increased just from that one performance. He may not get as many votes as the Davids, but he’ll get enough to be safe.

The other four worry me. Each has been in the bottom three at least once, and has had many ups and downs recently. Brooke and Carly especially were wrecks when they landed in the bottom three. Carly was able to recover, and I hope Brooke can, too, but I’m not certain she can. It may come down to song choice for her this week.

As it was before last season’s Idol Gives Back, this week’s theme is inspirational songs. This is where Brooke and Carly hit the jackpot. Carly can bring intense emotion to anything she sings, and Brooke is made for ballads. Any other week, either or both of them might be in danger, but this week I think they’ll both get a reprieve.

This leaves Jason and Syesha. While I think Syesha will make a good song choice and perform well, it’s up to her fans to keep her around. Unless she gives a stellar performance, I think she’ll be in danger. Jason, on the other hand, probably could give his best performance ever and would still be in trouble – I think the novelty has worn off for him, and people are getting frustrated that he’s not doing better. Jason is most likely bottom-three-bound as well.

What do you think, David?

Well, I know the novelty wore off of Jason for me a while ago – after all, I picked him to go home last week! I agree that this week, he’s in danger and will be in the bottom three. I also think Brooke and Carly will be safe, for many of the same reasons discussed above. I also think Brooke’s fans will kick into gear now that they saw their girl in danger. So really, that only leaves Syesha.

With Jason, Syesha, and Kristy in the bottom three, it could be anyone’s turn to head home. All three have had bumpy roads in the top 12, and none is guaranteed to stick around much longer. However, I think we might finally get what we’ve been waiting for – Kristy finally leaving.

I most definitely think we will say goodbye to Kristy. Then again, I’ve thought that for several weeks in a row before. But no, now I’m positive. As if that means anything.

So those are our predictions for the week. I think the bottom three will be Syesha, Kristy, and Jason, with Kristy going home, and I agree completely, which probably means we’ll both be completely wrong. Ah well.
