American Idol 7: Idol Ideals for the Top 8by Tyler Sandersfeld -- 04/07/2008
View Printable version of this article I don’t believe it. I not only predicted Ramiele’s ouster correctly, I also got the whole bottom three. I’m not planning on taking my luck to Vegas, but it’s pretty exciting to get something right for once. Although I didn’t learn anything from Ramiele, other than the classic lesson of how mediocrity doesn’t work, I did learn a valuable lesson from Syesha – copping out works. Syesha chose the most predictable song choice ever, and it didn’t hurt her one bit. At least, not immediately. This week, the Idols sing inspirational songs for Idol Gives Back. The goal this week is to make the viewers bawl like Chris Crocker. As far as that goes, I don’t think any remaining contestant has a severe advantage or disadvantage. The available songlist will most likely contain a number of songs that reach every contestant’s comfort zone. At this point, each Idol has his or her own identity, and changing it now could confuse the fans. Here’s what I have to say about each contestant this week. As always, I’ll start with those who just need to preach to the choir, and I’ll finish with those who’ll need to inspire some new fans ASAP. David Archuleta: David A.’s back on top. He’s done so well with message songs in the past that one more inspirational song should not be a problem at all – unless he’s already used up his repertoire. David’s only other potential problem is his tendency to breath heavily between lines. If this is indicative of a breathing problem, then it would be best for him to get that checked out before it causes a disaster in a performance. Otherwise, he will easily be here for at least another month. David Cook and Michael Johns: David C. has received good reviews for a few weeks now, while Michael is finally living up to the hype he set before the voting rounds. The two have defined themselves as rockers, and that’s only good news for one of them. The voters will most likely split them up before the final two, and it’s a little too late to redefine themselves to avoid that scenario. Michael will need to continue the quality he’s shown the past two weeks, as well as keep the women on his side. David, on the other hand, needs to keep the creativity high without becoming too samey. I know that’s not a word. Carly Smithson: Even though she’s the highest of the women this week, Carly’s not out of the woods by any means. Carly’s biggest problem is that the critiques she has received the past few weeks have been mixed in the purest sense of the word. Just last week, Simon disagreed with Randy and Paula’s approval, while many viewers (like NGH reporter Joseph Banks) agreed with Simon. Strangely, that was the first performance of hers that I truly loved. Getting the judges and America to agree on a Carly performance will be tricky, especially if that agreement is positive. However, I believe we can all agree on one thing – Carly needs a new stylist. Brooke White and Jason Castro: Like David C. and Michael, Brooke and Jason share a lot of similarities in their styles. The potential of splitting votes probably isn’t as great as that between the rockers, but the café crooners won’t escape unscathed. Also, a good number of viewers seem to be getting bored by these two. Unluckily for the bored ones, there should be plenty of inspirational songs that work best with just a voice and either a piano or acoustic guitar. For those who enjoy this style of music, I believe Brooke and Jason should do well this week. Kristy Lee Cook: I had a hunch that just because last week’s theme was country-related, Kristy wasn’t safe. She survived, but just barely. Now that she has, though, she can continue to appeal to the country fans without any interference other than her own voice. I’d advise not copping out with “Amazing Grace,” but since it worked for Syesha, it could work for Kristy Lee. Speaking of Syesha... Syesha Mercado: As I said at the top of this article, it appears that choosing the most predictable song and singing it in the most predictable way possible doesn’t predict a sure exit. Still, I’m not so sure that she’ll escape repercussions from that dunderheaded song choice. Syesha has fallen into the bottom three every other week, and this week won’t be any different, especially if she performs early. Oh, and if she performs “The Greatest Love of All” and survives, then I’ll take back all of my past comments about copping out being bad. That’ll do it for this week. I’ll be back after Idol Gives Back gives one more contestant a plane ticket home. See ya then! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out these other recent articles on Foxes On Idol:
