American Idol 7: Which Idol Will Go Second?by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 03/18/2008
View Printable version of this article Last week, we said goodbye to former stripper David Hernandez. Not because he was a stripper, apparently, but because he was a wrestler. He made “I Saw Her Standing There” tap out. I should say, I don’t think his past had anything to do with his exit, considering the week the news came out, he was preparing for his top sixteen performance and he made the top twelve anyway. David (Bloomberg, never a stripper), your thoughts? (As always, David speaks in boldface.) First, darn right I was never a stripper – by popular demand! And I agree that his stripping days were probably not the main reason he left us – though I do think it probably had an effect it shouldn’t have. I outlined all the reasons he left in Why David Hernandez Lost. Interesting week we had. We saw strong performances from places where we didn’t expect it (Chikezie, David Cook) and some flawed performances where we expected better (David Archuleta, Ramiele). Is the McCartney-Lennon songbook so tricky? I think it can be. The songs always come from such a strong emotional base that failing to connect with emotion will lead to a lackluster performance (take Ramiele for example). But that can be said of virtually any week, can’t it? I’m still not a David Cook fan, I’m afraid. But I wasn’t terribly surprised by a strong Chikezie performance – I knew he had it in him. I certainly was surprised by David Archuleta’s fall from grace, though. It wasn’t like he just had a so-so performance. He fell hard! This week, I am not putting Brooke in the bottom three. Hallelujah! I finally got through to you! In fact, I am going to really go out on a limb and predict three people who weren’t in the bottom three last week. David H. won’t be back, Syesha will have learned her lesson (and she won’t be first this week), and Kristy Lee is beckoning the country fans who doggedly support their “own.” Wow, those Kristy Lee fans really have you pulling her out of the top three entirely?! Yep. I am predicting the bottom three will be Michael Johns, Amanda Overmyer, and Ramiele Malubay. Michael has been fading for a while. He may finally put his fan base to sleep. Amanda may have trouble finding another song she can Amanda-ize. In fact, she may even try a, gulp, ballad. Imagine the horror. Ramiele because, as lovely a voice as she has, I think she is too immature to really connect with the emotion that she needs to. Crazy, I know, but they told Columbus he was nuts when he said the Earth was round, right? David, how do you see the bottom three? Actually, they didn’t tell Columbus that, as it was pretty well established by that point – that’s a common myth. But people aren’t reading this to hear my soapboxing on historical legends (though, where else can you get this sort of education on an American Idol website?). Frankly, Sting, I think you’ve had a little too much of the crazy juice to drink! Ramiele I can see, for the reasons you mentioned. But Amanda and Michael? No way! I’m sticking to the tried and true and predicting once again that Kristy Lee Cook will leave us. Yes, I know she murderized “Eight Days a Week,” but we’ve seen historically that contestants don’t always leave immediately in the week they should. Think back to Ryan Starr and her total destruction of “You Really Got Me” in week seven of the first season. It sucked, just as Kristy Lee did (perhaps even worse). And yet she stuck around until the next week. The thing is, Kristy Lee’s fans knew how bad she did. So they wanted to rescue her. If she doesn’t do quite that bad this week (and really, how could she?), they might not vote with quite the furious dedication, thus dooming her. This will especially be true if she sings early in the show, as opposed to second-to-last, as she did last week. It is both my hope and my prediction that she will leave us this week. As for the others in the bottom three with her, I’m going to work by process of elimination. I cannot imagine Brooke, Carly, either David, Amanda (sorry, Sting), or Michael (sorry again, Sting) in the bottom three yet. That leaves Chikezie, Jason, Ramiele, and Syesha. This is a hard prediction, and part of me says, “Who cares?! Kristy Lee is going and that’s really all that matters!” But I’ll ignore that part. All of these contestants have weaknesses, but I think Chikezie can ride last week’s performance at least another week, even if he doesn’t do as well this time. Jason is getting really dull, in my opinion, but his pretty-boy looks may keep him around. That leaves Ramiele and Syesha. I think I’m going to have to go with an all-female bottom three. I think the bottom three will be Amanda, Michael, and Ramiele, and we say goodbye to Ramiele! And while I agree (reluctantly) that Ramiele will be in the bottom three, I think she’ll stick around while Kristy Lee leaves and Syesha is the third member of the center-stage club. Who will be right? We’ll find out Wednesday night! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out these other recent articles on Foxes On Idol:
