American Idol 7: Which Idol Will Fall First?

by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 03/11/2008
With the Season 7 top 12 in place, the competition has begun in earnest! Some of the contestants sailed through to this level, while others have struggled. Who is already vulnerable, and who may be gaining momentum? Which Idol will fall first from the finals? Could it be Kristy Lee Cook (right)?

If this was the best top 24 ever, then it stands to reason that this is the best top 12 ever. I may be drinking the kool-aid because, to my eyes, this top 12 looks as strong, top to bottom, as I’ve seen. David, is this the best top 12 ever?

It definitely has some strong competitors, but I never like to talk about the strongest group ever – or really anything as an overall group. There are some contestants who are super-strong, and others who aren’t. I think the winner may already be obvious, but we know that what appears obvious now won’t be as apparent in a couple months. So we’ll just take it a week at a time. (As always, when David is speaking, it’s in boldface.)

Last week, we said goodbye to Luke Menard and Kady Malloy. A surprise to no one – not even them, based on the looks on their faces.

Indeed, we both picked Luke to go before their performances, and I picked Kady as well.

Perhaps more surprising were Asia’h Epperson and Danny Noriega. Asia’h was spunky (and frankly, her degree of difficulty in the songs she chose was awesome!), Danny was sassy (he drove some people nuts, I found him endlessly entertaining!), but in the end, it wasn’t enough to get them in the top 12. Maybe one day Danny will explain to me why he chose “Tainted Love,” a song that could be sung by coma patients and did nothing to showcase his luscious voice.

I don’t think he’ll explain anything – at least until he grows up a bit. I thought his voice had potential, but his bratty behavior once again showed that smarting off to the judges is just not a good idea. Besides, it’s one thing to have ego if you can back it up; it’s quite another if you can’t.

As for Asia’h, I’m kicking myself now for not being bolder in our article last week. I noted, “I’m thisclose to picking Asia’h to leave instead of one of the blondes, but I just can’t bring myself to do it.” I could have upped my success percentage if I had gone with her instead of Kristy Lee Cook. Ah well.

The way I see things is that some people kind of limped into the top 12 – specifically, Chikezie and Kristy Lee Cook. I think the good money is on both of them appearing in the bottom three this week. Who will join them? That’s when it gets a bit tricky. Depending on the genre and how they perform it, it would not surprise me to find Brooke White, Amanda Overmyer or… I’m gonna just say it, Michael Johns in the bottom three.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I just don’t get Brooke, and I think she will be exposed soon.

Sting, Sting, Sting. C’mon, man! In the past two weeks, she’s been amazing! You’ve got to get with it, man!

Amanda… something is going on there. If whatever that something is continues to distract her, it could ruin her performance and put her right at the bottom. She doesn’t seem to have a fan base that will pick up the slack for her. And Michael Johns is losing momentum as we speak. He’s like a car trying to coast uphill. I don’t know if he’s trying too hard or thinking too much or what, but he who was the sure number two male is looking up at David Cook and Jason Castro now.

My picks for bottom three are Chikezie, Kristy Lee Cook, and my gut is saying Amanda Overmyer. Going home will be Kristy Lee Cook. To her horses. David?

I certainly hope so. I’m definitely with you on picking Kristy Lee to go home. I just hope she doesn’t surprise us yet again. I also think you’re right about Chikezie joining her in the bottom three. I like him, but he just doesn’t seem to be connecting with the viewers. Indeed, if Kristy Lee has a decent performance (yeah, I know, it’s unlikely), he might go instead of her. As for the third person joining them, I don’t think Amanda will sink quite that quickly. I’m thinking David Hernandez is a likelier suspect to join them.

So there we have it. We both are picking Kristy Lee to go home and Chikezie to join her in the bottom three. The difference is that I think Amanda will also be at the bottom and I think it will be David H.
