If you’ve read our recap, you know what Randy, Paula, Simon, and Jenn thought. But what do our judges –David Bloomberg, Sandy Lamparello, Kathy Lonergan, and Bruce Barker – have to say? Carly Smithson, “Crazy on You” David: Carly did a great job with this Heart classic. She showed a strong enough voice to tackle it and powered through it nicely. A good start to the night! Sandy: Wow, Carly had the perfect voice for this song. I thought at first she was holding back a little but as she got into her performance she really opened up and sounded better. I liked it! Great way to open the ladies’ portion of round two. Kathy: Carly started out ominously; what was that bit where she was looking upward? It was as though she were reading a teleprompter! The song was a perfect match for her range, though at times she sounded so much like Ann Wilson that it might be construed as karaoke. I liked this more than I liked last week’s selection, (Simon was agreeing with me as I typed this) but I just don’t think she’s as untouchable as Simon seems to feel she is. Bruce: Without exception this season, the opening performer has managed to be forgettable, bland, and almost bordering on intolerable. Carly proved it doesn’t have to be that way. Her performance was a study of how to go first and be memorable. She had a whole lot more fuel in the tank then she needed to get the job done with this high-octane rocker. She simply sung the lights out of it. 9 Syesha Mercado, “Me and Mr. Jones” David: Syesha’s vocals on this song were fine, but I wasn’t exactly excited by it. In fact, I was rather bored – I kept finding my thoughts wandering off to other things (look, something shiny!) and had to force myself back to watching so I could judge it. Yawn. Sandy: Interesting song choice. Syesha seemed very tentative during the soft, slower parts, but she really tried to kick it into gear for the chorus. It was an OK performance, but Syesha can do better. Kathy: Syesha had a few pitch problems early on, but the way she controlled the dynamics more than made up for it. She can go from power to whisper effortlessly. I disagreed completely with Randy’s advice to go for songs where she can belt… there’s more to singing than just belting. I did agree, however, with Simon when he said that the choice of song was indulgent, not to mention that it was sung divinely by George Huff way back in Season 3. Bruce: I don’t understand it. This song is so full of natural soul that it literally drips emotion. So how is it that such a gifted young voice could skid all out of control? I could have forgiven the changing of the gender of the title had she been even close to the tempo or in the neighborhood of the key. I thought it was never going to end. 4 Brooke White, “You’re So Vain” David: The first few lines, as Brooke accompanied herself on the guitar, were among the best we’ve ever heard on Idol. In fact, I closed my eyes and just lost myself in her voice. She had a few minor cracks in her voice as she hit the chorus, but overall it was a great performance. Sandy: This was a good choice for Brooke, and even though she didn’t do anything spectacular with it, it was very well done. Brooke needed to distinguish herself among the blondes, and she may have just done it! Very well done! Kathy: Okay, be honest. You just knew Brooke would bring a Carly Simon or Carole King tune to the party. Here’s the thing, though – you probably thought she’d do her homework on the lyrics, yes? No such luck. (Psssst, Brooke… the word is “gavotte.”) That said, I liked the guitar, liked the vibe, vocals were okay. I think she’s safe. Bruce: I didn’t understand this either. How could Simon talk about a great connection with the song? Brooke smiled and bounced her way through one of the most bitter and sarcastic songs ever written. Her voice was pretty, but if you subtract the wry reference to Simon, the performance was as inspired and exciting as a grilled cheese sandwich. 6 Ramiele Malubay, “Don’t Leave Me This Way” David: There were glimpses of the strong voice I love in Ramiele’s performance. But they were scattered among the wreckage of the rest of this mess. I didn’t like it at all. Sandy: Ramiele is just so cute! And WOW she can sing. Her performance was edgy, passionate, and a lot of fun to watch. These ladies are ON this week! I have to say though, that one section of her bangs was driving me crazy. I wanted her to push it to the side and out of her eye! I have no idea what the on-site judges or David heard, because I loved it. 1 2 3 4 Next-->View Printable version of this article
