I’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 3, July 25

by Terri Kipper -- 07/26/2007
The dancers danced, the host hosted (right), the judges judged, and the choreographers choreographed. Now it’s time for Terri to tell you what she thought of all of them – including the idea of having each of the top ten dance the same dance over and over and over again.

New couples and solos? You think that’s going to throw me off, Fox? Guess again. Now that you’ve read Asher’s RealityNewsOnline recap, I’m back to judge not only each couple’s performance and solo, but I’m pointing the judging finger at… well… judges, hostess, and choreographers. But before I get all judge-tastic on you, I do need to point out some errors I made in my first article. 1) Jaimie’s name has two i’s in it. I originally spelled it without the first i. 2) I spelled Tyce’s name wrong, too. I spelled it with an i instead of a y. 3) The choreographer’s name is Jean-Marc, not the other Jean-combinations I came up with. I apologize to you all and hope you can forgive me. Let the games begin!

Lauren & Pasha – hip-hop

Not my favorite Shane Sparks routine. It seemed a little disconnected. The outfits didn’t make sense with the music and the choreography was fine, it just didn’t do it for me. Both Lauren and Pasha surprised me with how well they did. I’ve been underwhelmed with Lauren all season long, but she did well with this. I think she does well with the kooky stuff since it gives her a chance to be herself. Pasha did really well keeping up! I do wonder if some of the slower parts of the song were choreographed for Pasha’s sake.

Sabra & Kameron - contemporary

I disagreed with Mary regarding Kameron. I thought his extensions were fine. I think the judges are looking for all male contemporary dancers to dance like Danny, with the immaculate technique. With the judges holding him to that standard, he’s going to fall flat every time. Fortunately for him, though, he performs very well (more on that later). Sabra was definitely the stand-out of this routine. She had absolutely great lines, and she emotes with her entire body, which makes her performances absolutely beautiful to watch. I can see how Mia can endorse her as her favorite. Who knew she had such a following?

Lacey & Danny – samba

Look at Danny go! I recognize Danny’s a beautiful dancer, but he’s turned me off because he seems like a snob on and off the stage no matter what routine he does. This time, though, he looked like he had fun! His footwork was a little messy in places but his performance and facial expressions made up for it. I don’t know if Danny is into chicks or not, but he had me convinced he was! Lacey was the sexy vamp she always is, but I fear it’s starting to get old. I do want to add that she did a great job keeping up with the fast hips and the fast footwork that go with that type of routine.

Jaimie & Dominic – Viennese waltz

I really didn’t like this. (More on that later.) As always, Jaimie had amazing lines, but she brought out this new-found sensuality that she hadn’t really had before. Maybe it was the Latin aspect of the routine that allowed her to be sexy without being skanky. I agree with the judges about Dominic looking cartoonish during the routine. He was so animated and, adding the poor technique to it, it seemed like a farce. Not Dominic’s best. He’ll bounce back.

Sara & Neil - disco

I hate disco routines with a fiery passion. Having said that, this was freakin’ awesome! It looked fun without crossing into cheese country. Sara was hot. Neil was hot. The lifts were hot. The booty shaking was hot. I loved it!

Solos

Jaimie: The contemporary aspects of the routine were beautiful, which I’ve come to expect from you, but I was impressed to see how well you did with the hip-hop elements and stronger hits in the choreography, especially since hip-hop was a challenge for you.

Dominic: Your jumps were very good! I also liked the feeling you put into the routine. You wear your heart on your sleeve when you dance and it’s a beautiful thing to see.

Sara: You had amazing strength in this routine. Your hits had power and grace, but your extensions could have been a little softer. When it comes to contemporary aspects, you need to know how to look soft, but to perform with strength. Considering how well you’ve done at everything else, I’m sure you’ll catch on by the time you perform a contemporary routine.

Pasha: You were just okay for me. I adore you, but you didn’t seem as genuine as some of your peers. You did perform the routine well, though.

Lauren: Your energy was beautiful! You brought an intensity no one else brought to their routine, but there were times when you were out of control and off with the music. You have the tendency to rush the choreography, so be mindful of this in the future. You’re doing very well for me lately. Keep up the good work.

Neil: Jumps were amazing! A-MAZ-ING! After the judges noticed your hunched shoulders, I took a closer look and they do have the tendency to hunch when you’re really intense. Watch for it like they said. Other than that, it was beautiful.

Sabra: You were ahead of the music in some places and there were some choreography errors, albeit small ones, so make sure you have the choreography nailed if this solo format stays (more on that later). Aside from that, you were lovely. Well done!
