We’ll Be the Judge of That!, Grease: You’re the One that I Want!, March 18

by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 03/19/2007
It was the final chance for our Sandy and Danny wannabes to convince viewers to vote them directly into the lead roles of a Broadway show. So how did the final four do? Who do our judges think should be the stars? Read on to find out!

After the cuts were made and the final four revealed, it was time for the last round of judging. First, the two women sang. Then the two men. And then we had double-duets. Our judging panel is down to two this week, David “Danny” Bloomberg and Sandy “Sandy” Lamparello. What do they have to say?

Laura and Ashley, “Hopelessly Devoted to You”

David: I liked the format of having the two women singing the same song side-by-side – it really did allow us to compare them directly. Ashley did a good job, but Laura simply outshone her. If they hadn’t been singing the same song, it would have been a tough call. But in my opinion, it’s not now – Laura is Sandy.

Sandy: Laura sounded gorgeous when she started. She put emotion into her performance and looked the part. Ashley sounded a bit harsher and she appeared to be acting rather than actually feeling the song, if that makes sense. When Laura continued she clearly had a much purer sound than Ashley. They’re both very talented, but Laura seemed more natural throughout the song while Ashley’s performance was a bit more, I don’t know, mechanical maybe. I’d have to give that one to Laura.

Austin and Max, “Sandy”

David: I did not like Austin’s opening – it sounded… squeaky or whiny. Even once he got going, he still didn’t have the deeper voice I expected. Max sounded more like a Danny should – more like a real guy. Austin sounded more like an over-rehearsed actor. Frankly, Austin’s prerecorded piece didn’t do anything to make me want to vote for him either – it was like he was saying we should vote for him because it’s his turn. Max’s prerecorded piece was too sappy too, though. I’ve liked both guys throughout the competition, and while Max does not look like a standard Danny, I have to say right now – Max is Danny.

Sandy: Austin still gives me the creeps. His performances look so fake and I just don’t feel like he makes a connection. That puzzles me, because he has worked as a professional actor in the past. Max, on the other hand, seems much more genuine when he’s performing. Austin is talented, there’s no doubt about that, but I just find it hard to buy him as Danny. Vocally they were pretty much even but for seeming more natural and at ease, I’d give Max the nod on that one.

Austin & Ashley and Max & Laura, “Endless Love”

David: Interesting – I just complained that Austin’s voice wasn’t deep enough, and then he came out with a nice baritone in this song. On the flip side, I didn’t like the way Max started his part – too whispery. He recovered, though. As for the women, Ashley sounded fine, but I didn’t really notice her. Laura, on the other hand, made my pay attention. Austin made a good stride here, but I don’t think it was enough.

Sandy: Ashley and Austin sounded good but there didn’t appear to be much chemistry between them. They looked like they were acting the part of a couple. Maybe Austin creeps Ashley out as much as he does me… Laura and Max, on the other hand, were oozing chemistry. They looked much more comfortable together and sounded great too. As I watched, I wondered how each person would do with the other partner. And then, aha, after the break we found out!

Austin & Laura and Max & Ashley, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life”

David: Once again, Austin began with a nice baritone. Where the heck was that in his first performance? And Max’s opening again wasn’t very good. Austin continued sounding good throughout the song. Max sounded okay, but Austin definitely did better on this one. For the women, Laura simply kicked Ashley’s butt. Perhaps because of that, Max and Ashley didn’t really sound good together. I still think Austin seems a bit too overpolished, but I suppose that could be corrected by Kathleen the director during rehearsal if he wins.

Sandy: I’m glad they switched partners, it’s the only truly fair way to judge who should be Danny and who should be Sandy. Everyone sounded great, as usual. As for the couples, Laura seemed comfortable with Austin, but he didn’t seem as comfortable with her. I just can’t get past the feeling that whatever he does is mechanical and lacking in emotion. Ashley and Max seemed comfortable together but again I found her to be less natural on the stage than Laura. These duets only reinforced my earlier opinions of who should be Danny and Sandy.

Final Thoughts

David: The choice is clear for the women: Laura. For the men, not so much. I thought it was obvious after the first performance, but then Austin showed that his voice has more depth to it. However, this isn’t American Idol – there’s more to this part than just singing, and I think Max has all the extras. Therefore, I’m going to have to join the chorus of on-site judges and pick Max to go along with Laura.

Sandy: Laura postponed her wedding for this competition? Wow, her fiancé is a real prince. I wonder if he has a brother… It’s been no secret for the past few weeks that she’s my pick for Sandy, and I still think she should win. I’ve loved Max from the start and there’s no doubt in my mind he should be Danny. And after seeing the duets, Laura and Max worked best together. So, clearly they will be playing the lead roles on Broadway, right?! We’ll find out how right I am next week, won’t we? The last performance show of the season means my last time judging the aspiring Dannys and Sandys. It’s been a lot of fun and I hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have. Ciao!

Conclusions

So there we have it. The on-site judges said it should be Max and Laura. Sandy and David said it should be Max and Laura. Will the viewers agree? We hope so! But this was the last “We’ll Be the Judge of That!” for this show – catch Sandy and David in their judging roles for American Idol and Sandy for Dancing with the Stars, both right here on Foxes On Idol!
