We’ll Be the Judge of That! – Grease: You’re the One that I Want!, February 25

by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 02/26/2007
It’s a Sandy special on Grease: You’re the One that I Want! Only the Sandy wannabes perform (well, except for one Danny wannabe who is sent home), and the Foxes On Idol judges are here to tell you who did well and who didn’t.

The ranks of Dannys and Sandys are slimming down. But the ranks of “We’ll Be the Judge of That!” judges are at their highest point yet this season, with all three present and accounted for. Indeed, it’s appropriate that this was a “Sandy Special,” because our very own Sandy returns to our panel this week to rejoin David and Bruce.

Ashley, “These Boots Are Made for Walking”

David: Ashley started off flat and rather dull. And frankly, I don’t think she ever got much better. She really didn’t project, didn’t excite, and didn’t show any noticeable amount of energy. Bo-ring.

Sandy: Ashley had the perfect look for this song. She sounded okay. I wasn’t blown away, but it wasn’t a bad performance.

Bruce: I thought this was a perfectly adequate performance – no more, no less. It seemed just a bit affected, but the wink she gave the camera at the end of the performance is going to buy her a chunk of votes… assuming all the 15-year-old boys aren’t ogling whatever Salma Hayek wore to the Oscars. <7>

Allie, “It’s Oh So Quiet”

David: That was an interesting song – it allowed Allie to show off both a quiet side and a more excited side. And she did both very well! She also acted her part well on the stage (if not in Kathleen’s tests). If she keeps it up, she has a good chance of winning.

Sandy: Was anyone else expecting Allie to come out in a swan dress? She looked really cute and sounded great. Well, except for the screams. Wasn’t crazy about the screams. This was a fun performance and Allie looked completely at ease up on the stage.

Bruce: Bjork? Nobody can sing Bjork! Even Bjork can’t sing Bjork! What’s the matter guys, Yoko Ono wouldn’t let you have anything from her catalog? Anyway, it’s very easy to go from a soft moment to a high-energy vocal and dance routine. It’s a lot more difficult to go back to the soft vocalizations while maintaining breathing control. Allie pulled it off twice. It was amazing and a heck of a lot harder than she made it look. 9

Laura, “Fever”

David: The judges said they wanted to see a sultry side from Laura, and I think she brought exactly that with this performance. She moved well from the near-whispers to the more forceful portions of the song. Allie won’t have a cakewalk to the finals – Laura is big competition!

Sandy: Laura looked really pretty and she put a lot of passion and heat into her performance. The dress slit up to high heaven was a perfect complement to this song too. And Laura’s singing was great. Well done!

Bruce: The arrangement was so overly ambitious that at times Laura seemed to careen from stage mark to stage mark. Her voice was a bit shaky because…. well, see the careen comment above. They wanted to see sexiness from her and considering I almost had to use the hose on my roommate to calm him down after the performance, I think she gave the people what they want. 8

Kevin, Chad, Kate, Kathleen – Sing-Off to “Blue Moon”

David: Chad did a good job of showing why there was no reason he should have even been in the bottom two this week. Kevin did a pretty good job as well, but I think his goose was cooked before he ever opened his mouth. Kate did pretty well also, but Kathleen was the worst of the bunch. And you know, the more I see her, the more she looks like the devil. I can’t believe they saved her.

Sandy: Chad started off well but as he got into it he was a bit out of tune. Kevin continued the out of tune performance when he took over but recovered a bit towards the end of his portion. Kate was a bit better but when Kathleen started it was clear who the better of the two ladies was. Before hearing from the judges, I guessed that Kevin and Kate had performed for the final time. And I was right!

Bruce: Well, just as I was writing down Kate and Kevin’s names, my roommate blurted out, “blue Sandy, green Danny – outta here.” Kate was far too shrill and had desperation in her eyes that she couldn’t hide. Kevin seemed affected and resigned to his fate before the midpoint of the song. There were no surprises here.

Kathleen, “Let’s Hear It for the Boy”

David: Wow, Kathleen sounded bad to open that song. In fact, I was wondering if the judges wished they could have their decision back! It sounded like a high school talent show. And it never got any better. I wanted to fast forward through it, but out of dedication to my job here, I listened to the whole thing. I really hope she’s a great actress, because she’s not a great singer. And she still looks like the devil.

Sandy: It had to be hard for Kathleen to come out and perform just a few minutes after almost being booted off. It showed. She was out of tune and was too reserved for this song, which is supposed to be fun and energetic. She needed to move around more and put more power behind her vocals.

Bruce

Well, that was a little unfair! They barely gave her enough time for the costume change and then she had to rush right back out and sing for her life! The pros do it all the time though, and it’s something she should get used to. She responded by sounding worse than a live chicken in a blender. She was horribly off key, shrill, and at times inaudible. I’ll go ahead and make my prediction right now that she’ll be singing for her life again next week. Considering the vast talent gap between this performance and the work of the other Sandys, that it will be the last we see of Kathleen. 2

Final Thoughts

David: This may be the easiest pick we’ve had yet. Allie and Laura did great jobs. Kathleen and Ashley didn’t. Kathleen has been in the bottom two twice already – I don’t care if she’s a good actress, three strikes should mean she’s out.

Sandy: Not only was I away from judging the past two weeks, but I didn’t get to see the episodes either. So this was my reintroduction to the aspiring Sandys. I was very impressed! Laura gave my favorite performance of the night, followed by Allie. That leaves Ashley and Kathleen as the bottom two. One of them will be leaving us and I think it will be Kathleen. I’ll be right here next week for the special night of Dannys, and for the elimination of another Sandy. I hope you’ll join us! Ciao!

Bruce: Well, this was easy. With just four performances to listen to this week, the first choice for the next Sandy sing-off is obvious. Kathleen was simply too far behind the other three in terms of talent. I’ll drop Ashley down there with her but as I said, it doesn’t matter. They could have a woman in active labor sing opposite Kathleen next week and it will still be time for her to leave.

Conclusions

The first time all three judges are together, and they are in complete agreement about both who will be in the sing-off and who will be headed home. Goodbye, Kathleen!
