We’ll Be the Judge of That! – Celebrity Duets, September 21by Sandy Lamparello -- 09/22/2006
View Printable version of this article You’ve seen the show (if you weren’t still laughing hysterically at Tribal Council from Survivor), and you’ve read the RealityNewsOnline recap. Now it’s time to see what the Foxes On Idol judges think. Due to a combination of bad weather in parts of the country and Survivor being on right before Celebrity Duets, the judging panel this week is a bit slim – in fact, it’s just one person, Sandy Lamparello! But that just means nobody is here to argue with her, so she must be right! Jai Rodriguez & Patti LaBelle, “Lady Marmalade” Sandy: Jai sounded great right from the start! After last week, I wasn’t expecting much but he really impressed me. He and Patti made a great duo and he let her take the spotlight at all the right times. And wow Jai is HOT! What an awesome way to start this week’s show! Lucy Lawless & Richard Marx, “Right Here Waiting” Sandy: Okay, WHAT was Lucy wearing? It looks like something out of Monsters, Inc.! She didn’t sound bad but I would have liked to hear more power behind her singing. And I wasn’t crazy about how she matched up with Richard. Their voices just didn’t mesh for me. Maybe I was just let down because Jai put on such a great show, but I wasn’t moved. Hal Sparks & Dee Snider, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” Sandy: It was painful listening to Hal scream his way through this song. And the contrast with Dee’s voice, which Hal was obviously trying to imitate, made his screaming even more obvious. Hal put a lot of energy into his performance, I’ll give him that, but overall his singing sounded like a big old mess. I love this song and Hal butchered it. Cheech Marin & Al Jarreau, “Mornin’” Sandy: Cheech looked great this week, and he sounded great too! He and Al blended very well together and I could tell Cheech was having fun during this performance. This was a great song for Cheech. Good for him! Alfonso Ribeiro & Chaka Khan, “Through the Fire” Sandy: Alfonso did a wonderful job with this song! I thought at times he sounded even better than Chaka. I did find his bouncing to be a bit distracting at the beginning of the song, but it didn’t take much away from the overall performance. I didn’t love it as much as I loved Jai’s performance, but it was up there. Final Thoughts Sandy: There was a clear division between our celebrities who did well this week and those who did not. I have to put Jai at the top, followed closely by Cheech and Alfonso. Two eliminations means there will be no need to choose between the two bottom performers this week. Lucy and Hal have sung their last duets and will be taking their leave. I’ll see you—and our three remaining celebrities—back here next week for the finale. Ciao!
