We’ll Be the Judge of That! – Celebrity Duets, September 7

by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 09/08/2006
Last week, Jai Rodriguez (right) was undoubtedly the best of the celebrity singers. Will that hold true this week as well? Who improves? Who needs to go back to step one? And what do the Foxes On Idol judges have to say? Read on to find out!

You’ve seen the duets, heard the judges mostly fawn over the celebs, and read the RealityNewsOnline recap – now it’s time to find out what the Foxes On Idol judging panel has to say. Ashley Lundy and David Bloomberg can’t wait to tell you what they think!

Hal Sparks & Wynonna, “I Want to Know What Love Is”

Ashley: I’m still surprised that Hal can actually sing. He even sounded in tune. They really had fun on this song and I thought they might start cracking up when Wynonna grabbed him and pulled him closer. It was good, but I’m not sure that was the right song choice for Hal. I liked him better on the soulful songs of last week.

David: Oh my. In tune? No way! Hal’s opening sounded like a bad American Idol audition in the initial rounds. Then he started screaming – not singing, screaming – and it only got worse. I felt sorry for Wynonna with him yelling in her face like that. Very, very bad. And I think the judges need to get their ears checked.

Lea Thompson & Belinda Carlisle, “Heaven is a Place on Earth”

Ashley: Lea is a real firecracker! She puts everything into her performance. I personally thought her voice was very wobbly and pitchy in the beginning. Maybe it was just nerves. It also seemed like she was trying too hard to sell the performance and not focusing as much on the vocals. She made it all work in the middle, but I swore I heard a sour note at the end.

David: Lea sounded okay at first, but then we heard Belinda and, well, Lea’s voice paled in comparison. And when they sang together, I could really only hear Belinda – or maybe I only wanted to hear Belinda. She didn’t disappoint her kids, but she didn’t exactly knock it out of the park either.

Cheech Marin & Clint Black, “Been There”

Ashley: Great song. I think Cheech should stick with country music. It works for him. I thought that was a much better showing than last week. He was more relaxed and put some soul in it. Not bad! Although, I completely agree with David Foster and there is no way he will win.

David: Cheech started off surprisingly well – and he actually stayed that way. He didn’t look terribly comfortable on-stage, almost like he didn’t know what to do with himself, but it was not a bad performance, really.

Alfonso Ribeiro & Jeffrey Osborne, “On the Wings of Love”

Ashley: Nice. Very nice. Alfonso picked a good song for his voice and he started off solid. Then he glided rather effortlessly through the rest of it. I didn’t mind the cheesy dancing either. It’s what Alfonso does. I thought this was a great performance.

David: Alfonso could teach the other celebrities in this competition a thing or two about singing. He was able to demonstrate a range in his singing that none of the other singers so far have even come close to showing this level of talent.

Carly Patterson & Anita Pointer, “I’m So Excited”

Ashley: Carly sounded better than last week, that’s for sure. Someone’s been practicing! Why does that not surprise me coming from an Olympic Gold medalist? The performance had fantastic energy and I thought their voices mixed nicely. I hope she keeps getting better and better.

David: Ouch. That was bad. I didn’t think it was better than last week at all. And I felt pain for Anita, having to sing backup “ooooh”s to Carly at times. You know how earlier I said Hal sounded like a bad Idol audition? This sounded like one that would get played over and over again to remind us just how bad it was. And isn’t it odd that Anita was not asked to give her opinion of Carly? I think they must not have wanted to make her lie too much. And if Marie Osmond is going to call everybody “great” no matter how bad they sound, what’s the point of having her there?

Jai Rodriguez & Brian McKnight, “Back to One”

Ashley: Jai is the one to beat. Even with a sore throat, he sang the best of the night. He held his own next to Brian and again impressed the heck out of me. I think it’s a done deal and this is his competition to lose.

David: Jai was definitely not as much on his game this time as last week. Maybe it was his throat problems, maybe something else. But even at this lower point, he was still better than all the other celebs except for Alfonso!

Lucy Lawless & Kenny Loggins, “Whenever I Call You Friend”

Ashley: I appreciated that Lucy is working double-time on voice training. I thought it really paid off. She sounded much improved from last week and still looked downright gorgeous. Their voices also sounded wonderful together. She needs to keep up the practicing and she may go far.

David: I’m not really not quite sure what to make of that performance. Lucy came off as somebody trying to be a great singer, but it never seemed to come together. At times during the duet, they were singing together nicely; at others, it seemed like they were in two totally different places. I have to agree with David Foster – not bad but not great.

Final Thoughts

Ashley: Wow. I thought every single contestant improved from last week’s performances. Jai is, of course, my favorite and, in my opinion, the most talented singer. I didn’t think anyone really had a terrible night, but someone has to go home. I think Cheech probably had the weakest performance compared to the others and will probably be sent home tomorrow night.

David: Alfonso was the best of the night, with Jai not far behind. Who was the worst? Without a doubt, Carly. She really needs to go home. Hal should join her in the bottom two. If there’s a bottom three, I guess I’d put Cheech there.

This will likely be my last Celebrity Duets “We’ll Be the Judge” column, since Survivor begins next week and airs an hour before this show. So I’ll make some predictions now: Jai will win this show unless he pulls a Dilana and lets it get away from him. If he does, Alfonso could slip in there. Nobody else should even give them a run for their money if the voting is based on talent.

Conclusions

So this week, our Foxes On Idol judges heard things a lot differently from each other – and in some cases a lot differently than the judges! While David thinks Carly was clearly the worst, Ashley believes Cheech will be sent packing. Will either of them be right? We’ll have to tune in Friday night to find out!
