Idol Chartwatch, August 25: It’s All About Mario!

by Donna Reynolds -- 08/25/2006
Mario Vazquez shocked the Idol world by dropping out of the competition right after he made the top 12. But now, his new single is dominating the Billboard charts, and this week, “Gallery” appears on five of them! Read on for all the details.

Looks like there'll be a new Idol-related compilation CD for me to chart in September. Paris Bennett is featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the movie, Everyone's Hero. She'll be featured on the song "The Tigers" with John Debney. The album drops on September 12.

Top 14 finisher Ayla Brown has signed a contract with Double Deal records. Her first single will drop on September 14 and her album, tentatively called Forward, is due out in October.

This Week’s Singles Charts

This week, it was all about Mario Vazquez and his single, “Gallery.” It was #57 on the Top 100, #73 on the Top 100 Airplay, #35 on the Pop 100, and #21 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. The single also entered the Hot Digital Songs chart at #54. (You can pre-order his album of the same name at the end of this article.)

Taylor’s “Do I Make You Proud” / “Takin’ it to the Streets” dropped to #2 on the Single Sales chart and dropped off the Pop 100. It was #27 on the Adult Contemporary listing.

Katharine McPhee’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” / “My Destiny” dropped to #3 on the Single Sales chart this week.

Thanks to a reader who pointed out that Ruben Studdard has a new single on the charts. In its third week, “Change Me,” the first single from his upcoming album, The Return, is #50 on the Hip Hop/R&B chart. Go Ruben! (And you can pre-order his new album at the end of this article, too.)

Here’s how the rest of the singles did this week:

  • Bo’s “The Real Thing” was #21 on the Adult Contemporary list.
  • Carrie Underwood’s “Don’t Forget to Remember Me” was #74 on the Hot 100. “Before He Cheats” was #30 on the Country chart.
  • Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away” was #9 on the Adult Top 40 and #22 on the Adult Contemporary chart. “Because of You” was #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
  • Miranda Lambert’s “New Strings” was #43 on the Country chart.

Idol Albums

American Idol Season Five Encores dropped again, ending up at #183 on the Billboard 200 and was #9 on the Top Soundtracks list.

Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts was up one spot to #31 on the Billboard 200 and remained #5 on the Country chart. (As a side note, she drew the largest audience of any act at this year’s Illinois State Fair, which ended last week.) Kelly Clarkson’s CD, Breakaway dropped to #83 on the Billboard 200. Miranda Lambert’s Kerosene dropped off the Billboard 200 but remained on the Country Chart at #41.

There’s a new Idol-related compilation album out this week, and I think it should spawn yet another single for Kelly Clarkson. The soundtrack for the movie Girl Next is out, and Kelly’s “Breakaway” is back in a new, exclusive acoustic version. The album debuted at #76 on the Billboard 200 and was #3 on the Compilation chart.

Here’s how the rest of the Idol-related compilation albums charted this week:

  • Now That’s What I Call Music #22 (Now 22) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away,” along Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me,” Teddy Geiger’s (from The New Partridge Family) “For You I will (Confidence),” Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” and K.T. Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” was #6 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Compilation chart.
  • Now That’s What I Call Music #21 (Now 21) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” was #2 on the Compilation chart.
  • Wow Gospel 2006, featuring George Huff’s “Brighter Day” was #19 on the Top Compilation chart and #7 on the Gospel listing.
  • Now That’s What I Call Music #20 (Now 20) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” was #20 on the Compilation Chart.
  • The Gospel featuring Tamyra Gray’s “Now Behold the Lamb” was #19 on the Gospel chart.

And that’s Chartwatch for this week!
