Idol Chartwatch, October 31: It’s Getting’ Hot in Here!by Donna Reynolds -- 10/31/2005
View Printable version of this article We had a discussion this week about what qualifies an artist for inclusion in this column. While the title implies that we are watching Idol alum, we have stretched that description to include people from other TV talent shows who may have caught our fancy. We also include compilation albums on which any of these people appear. Got it? I apologize for the delay in getting this out this week. I have been trying to put this list together on Thursdays when Billboard updates their charts. But this week, the new charts weren’t posted until Friday. That being said, let’s take a look at this week’s album charts. Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway dropped one spot to #12 on the Top 200. In the UK, it dropped four spots to #12. In Australia, it jumped up two spots to #4 (just in time for Kelly’s Australian tour, which starts on November 18), and moved up to #10 in Canada. Josh Gracin’s self-titled album is #141 on the Top 200, and #25 on the Top Country chart. Miranda Lambert, who finished third on the first (and I say best) Nashville Star, finds her first CD, Kerosene, at #32 on the Hot Country chart this week. There is a lot of buzz about Miranda, and she even turned up on Rolling Stone’s 2006 calendar for the month of November, looking mighty good, I might add! Fantasia’s Free Yourself is #69 on the Hot R&B Chart and LaToya London’s Love and Life came in at #61. George Huff’s Miracles is #45 on the Top Christian Chart and #12 on the Top Gospel Chart, and Clay Aiken’s Merry Christmas With Love is #3 on the list of Top Holiday Albums. Here are where Idol-related compilation albums placed this week:
Here are the results for Idol-related singles: Kelly’s “Because of You” moved up to #8 on the Billboard 100. It’s #4 on the Pop 100 chart, #7 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and #8 on both the Hot Digital Songs and Hot Digital Tracks charts. The song is #2 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart, #14 on the Adult Top 40, #5 on Dance Radio Airplay, and #34 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, one of four of her songs to chart in the top 40 on that chart. “Behind These Hazel Eyes” dropped four spots to #26 on the Billboard 100, and is #23 on the Pop 100. It charted at #27 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and #16 on Pop 100 Airplay. The single is still hot on the digital charts, coming in at #41 on Hot Digital Songs and #42 on Hot Digital tracks (I can’t for the life of me figure out what the difference is here). The song is #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #17 on Adult contemporary. “Since U Been Gone” disappeared from the Billboard 100, but remains on the Adult Contemporary chart at #26, and is #38 on Hot Digital Songs and #38 on Hot Digital Tracks. ”Breakaway” remains at #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Here’s a bit of trivia for you: This week last year, “Breakaway” was #9 on the Top 100. I am amazed at Kelly’s staying power and her total lock on these charts. Congratulations to Carrie Underwood whose second single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” debuted this week at #39 on the Hot Country chart, earning this week’s “Hot Shot Debut.” Her first single, “Inside Your Heaven,” is still charting on the Adult Contemporary chart where it is #15. Fantasia’s “Free Yourself” is #24 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and “Ain’t Gon Beg You” is #53 on the same chart. Josh Gracin’s “Stay With Me (Big Brass Bed)” dropped three spots to #52 on the Top 100 chart, and is #10 on the Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. It also showed up at #57 on the Hot Digital Songs Chart, #66 on the Pop 100, and maybe most significantly, #56 on Hot 100 Airplay. Kimberley Locke’s “I Could” remains in the top 10 (#10) on the Adult Contemporary chart. “Pretty Vegas” by “our band” INXS featuring J.D. Fortune is #82 on the Billboard Hot 100, #54 on the Pop 100, #37 on Hot Digital Songs, #30 on Hot Digital Tracks, and #7 on the Hot Digital Songs chart. But the biggest Rock Star news this week is the debut of Marty Casey’s “Trees,” which showed up at #99 on the Pop 100.
Finally, Miranda Lambert’s single, “Kerosene,” is #42 on the Hot Country Chart. Donna’s Pick of the Week Carlos Santana’s All That I Am drops this week. “So what,” you say. Have you forgotten that Bo Bice has a track, “Brown Skin Girl,” on this CD? I didn’t think so. This is Santana’s 38th album (wow), and includes and interesting mix of today’s hottest artists (Joss Stone, Michelle Branch, Mary J. Blige and Sean Paul, to name a few). Pre-release reviews are mixed, but it’s Santana for crying out loud! Just being included on this album has to give Bo a little street cred. That’s it for Chartwatch this week.
