American Idol 4: Which Idol Will Fall Ninth?

by Phil Kural with David Bloomberg -- 05/10/2005
It’s getting down to the wire on American Idol 4, as we head into the final stretch with the final four. Anybody could take home the title at this point, but someone still has to go home this week. Could Phil’s favorite, Vonzell (right), be the ninth Idol to fall?

I’m sorry, but this season of American Idol just flew by. It had its share of controversies, some of the Idols had their pasts exposed, and one guy quit. Remember him? My point exactly – life moved on. We are at the crucial point in the competition where anything can happen. The final four on this show has always been filled with shockers. Tamyra Gray, LaToya London? Both shouldn’t have gone home when it was down to four, but still did. Will that happen this season? Let’s explore who could possibly be the ninth Idol to fall.

Now that Scott has been eliminated, Anthony is the least consistent one left. However, that really means nothing in this competition. It’s all about the fan base, and Anthony has a strong one. However, it’s deservedly so – he’s a good singer, and a pretty good performer as well. I’m a fan. He still has to worry though. With Carrie and Bo still on their tidal wave to the final two, Anthony really has to step it up this week. I’ve found myself this season feeling one of two ways after Anthony finishes his songs. I’m either saying, “Wow, he nailed it!” or, “Uh-oh, he’s in trouble!” It’s been more the former, but that doesn’t mean he’s safe. Carrie and Bo have been pretty consistent, and with Carrie still not being in the bottom yet, and Bo back on the rise, it’s going to be hard for Anthony to NOT be in the bottom two. Where it goes from there I’m not sure yet.

David adds: I agree with Phil’s characterization of the very different ways I feel after Anthony performs. However, I have tended to feel more of the “trouble” overall.

If you can see I’m saying that Carrie and Bo are safe, that means I think Vonzell will be the other person in the bottom two this week. I think I’ve made it quite clear that Vonzell is my favorite Idol this season. I liked her from when I saw her first audition in Orlando. Some wanted to dismiss her as another “Diva” but she’s nothing like the “Divas” we’ve come to know on this show. She’s got personality, stage presence, and doesn’t come off too showy or argue with the judges. I think Vonzell has more than it takes to be the American Idol, but she is still in danger. She has the potential to be safe this week, but Vonzell is really going to have to work it. Of all the Idols this season, she’s raised the most in rank, and I bet there are very few people that pegged her to be in the final four. Can her fan base outshine Anthony’s though? I’m not so sure.

David: Once again, I agree with Phil that Vonzell will be in the bottom two. I like her also – in fact, I like her more than Carrie most of the time, and feel I would be more likely to buy a Vonzell album than a Country Carrie one. But I don’t think that will keep her safe.

Well, my prediction this week is that Anthony and Vonzell will be our bottom two. Carrie or Bo could give a horrible performance, but I think their spots in the final three are pretty much all locked up. Anthony and Vonzell both have strong fan bases, or they wouldn’t be where they are right now.

However, which fan base will end up on top? That has yet to be seen. I know in my heart that I want Vonzell to at least get to the top three. Honestly, I want her to win, but I think she deserves to be in the top three. Her performances over the course of the competition have gotten better each week, always earning the praise of most of the judging panel. Even Simon has said that she has risen in the ranks. However, I don’t think the steamroller that is Anthony Fedorov is ready to come to halt yet. I won’t be mad if Anthony makes the final three, but I’ll be disappointed that Vonzell didn’t.

David adds: I won’t be mad if Anthony makes it, but I at least want him to perform well enough to deserve it. Last week was pretty bad – if he has another show like that and Vonzell is up to her usual level, Anthony should go. In fact, looking at the four remaining, I think Anthony should go unless somebody else falls off a stage. It’s not that I dislike him, it’s just that he has not been consistent enough.

Alas, I think Vonzell will be the ninth Idol to fall. I’m still going to be dialing my fingers off voting for her, and I hope you will be too.

David adds: Well, I’ll predict Anthony. He has a fan base, but I just don’t think it will hold up well enough.

We’ll be back next week to predict who will be in the finals!
