American Idol Scandal: Could Paula Really Be That Dumb?

by David Bloomberg -- 05/04/2005
Some of the details of Corey Clark’s accusations – to air more fully tonight on ABC – have been released. As we look at them and compare Paula Abdul’s supposed behavior, we have to wonder: Could she really have been that dumb?

With the newest information finally released by ABC that details some of the accusations made by ex-Idol contestant Corey Clark, we are still missing a lot of details. What we know is that the basis for the Primetime Live special tonight is that Corey claims he had an affair with Paula Abdul, instigated by Paula, while he was still a contestant on American Idol 2 and she was a judge.

There are still many questions, which of course is the point since ABC wants us to watch the special! But one of the questions that we can speculate on right now relates to an issue I brought up in my article earlier today outlining the new information. Specifically, is Paula really that dumb?

Let’s look at the claims and the overall situation. First, Paula Abdul was pretty much a washed-up popstar until the first American Idol came along. She had not had a hit record in years and was not exactly a household name. But Idol changed all of that. After that first summer, Paula’s name was known far and wide, and her opinions were debated around watercoolers. Many people felt she was far too easy on the contestants – something that has not changed to this day. But the point is that she was famous again, and by the second season all the judges were doing quite well for themselves.

The information released so far seems to indicate that Paula and Corey hooked up during the semi-final round of 32. Supposedly, an associate of Paula’s slipped Corey a piece of paper with her phone number on it. An associate? Who? And why would she involve somebody else and thus open herself up to the possibility of being discovered?

According to Clark’s claims, they talked on the phone and that was when Paula offered to be a mother-figure to him, which quickly switched to a “special friend.” As part of being that “special friend,” she supposedly coached him, picked his songs, picked his clothes, got him a haircut, etc. Why? All so she could turn him from a diamond in the rough to a sparkling gem.

Again, there are many questions here. First of all, why Corey? I suppose it could be argued that you can’t choose who you fall in love with, and so it’s possible that Paula became smitten with him. But so smitten she would risk everything she had only recently gained, just for him? For a guy she barely knew?

And what a risk it would have been. According to Corey, he sat down with Paula to pick out his song. He had phone conversations with her and even his parents talked to her on the phone. He even supposedly introduced her to a couple of his friends!

Let’s think about this for a moment. If this is true, Paula avoided directly giving her number to Corey by going through an intermediary. She was careful enough to avoid being seen with him such that Carmen Rasmusen, a fellow contestant, said she never saw them alone together, and no other contestant has gone on record (as far as we know) to say that they were seen together. And somehow she hid it from the producers and anybody who might talk to the producers.

So she went through all of that to keep the affair hidden, but then she basically flaunted their relationship to his parents and friends? Does that smack of ridiculousness to anybody besides me?

It’s possible that the Primetime Live special will shed some more light on all of this and make it all somehow make sense. But right now, I have to look at what we have in front of us and just shake my head. How stupid would Paula have to be? It will take a lot more good explanation tonight to show that she was indeed dumb enough to risk everything for the likes of Corey.
