Idol Chartwatch, March 5: Albums Fall, Singles Do Okay

by David Bloomberg -- 03/05/2004
Last week, it was bad news all around for the former Idols. This week, while albums have not been doing well, at least the singles are doing alright. Read on for all the Chart details, including new CDs that will be coming soon.

It’s been a better week overall than the previous week for our Idol and other reality show participants – at least for singles. Idol albums are still dropping, though.

We begin with Ruben’s Soulful, which drops from #17 to #22 in the album’s 12th week on the chart. It also drops one spot to #6 on the R&B/Hip-Hop album chart, as Young Gunz and Trillville/Lil Scrappy both debut ahead of him, but OutKast falls to #8.

However, “Sorry 2004” moves back up a notch to #9 after falling to #10 last week. Plus, the cut is again listed as one with the greatest airplay and sales gains over the week. So he is still in the race to get the stand-alone highest ranking for a non-Idol single by a former Idol contestant. He’s tied with Kelly Clarkson right now. On the R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart, he moves up a notch to #2, its highest spot, as Twista Featuring Kanye West & Jamie Foxx drops to #4.

Clay takes another huge tumble as Measure of a Man drops from #57 to #74 in its 20th week on the charts. This is after dropping from #41 just a week prior – for a total of 33 spots in two weeks. Ouch. Meanwhile, “Invisible” dropped one spot to #11 on the Adult Contemporary singles chart as Michael McDonald’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” jumped ahead of him as the greatest gainer.

Last week, we had no news on when his new single would be released. But shortly after, we got exactly the news we had been looking for – that Clay’s CD-single of “The Way” and “Solitaire” would be released March 16. I’m betting that with a combination of sales and airplay because of his current tour with Kelly Clarkson, Clay’s new single will debut pretty high – possibly even in the Top 10. We’ll see in a couple weeks.

Still no sign of Kimberley Locke’s single, “8th World Wonder,” on the charts. But it will be sold starting next week, so sales could also jumpstart it onto the charts. Her album, One Love, is also available for pre-order now, but won’t debut until May.

In non-Idol news, Nashville Star winner Buddy Jewell once again stayed at #10 on the Country singles chart with “Sweet Southern Comfort,” though the song continued to show increases in detections over the previous week. It will be interesting to see if the song starts moving again now that Nashville Star 2 will be starting up this weekend. (You can click here to find out more about it.)

And of course we have Newlyweds’ Jessica Simpson, who drops from #15 to #16, even as two new albums debut ahead of her on the chart. Her current single, “With You,” stays at #16 on the overall singles chart and at #5 on the Top 40 singles chart. It also sits atop the Top 40 Mainstream singles chart at #1.
