‘From Justin to Kelly’ Given a Golden Raspberry

by David Bloomberg -- 03/01/2004
From Justin to Kelly was not exactly well-received by audiences. However, it was very by the Golden Raspberry award committee. Find out just how well by reading on.

Last night was the big night for movies – the Oscars. However, on the day before that came a different awards show that “honored” the worst of 2003 – the Razzies, or the Golden Raspberry Awards.

Now why, you might be asking yourself, would we have an article on the Razzies here on Foxes On Idol. Well, let’s think for a moment about why that might be. Hmmm. What movie associated with American Idol might be deserving of such an award?

Yes, From Justin to Kelly was presented with a Razzie.

But before we get to the specifics, let us note that FJtK was by no means the worst movie of 2003. Gigli was nominated in nine categories and won in six – for worst picture, worst actor (Ben Affleck), worst actress (Jennifer Lopez), worst screen couple (the two of them), worst director, and worst screenplay.

FJtK was nominated in the categories of Worst Picture – along with Gigli, Cat in the Hat, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and The Real Cancun. Justin Guarini was nominated as the worst actor, in good company along with Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mike Meyers, and Ashton Kutcher. Kelly Clarkson was nominated for worst actress along with Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, and Cameron Diaz.

The duo of Justin and Kelly were nominated in the worst screen couple category. The movie was nominated as the worst excuse for an actual movie, and also as a worst remake or sequel, with the Razzies saying it was a remake of Where the Boys Are ‘60 and Where the Boys Are ‘84.

But wait, there’s more! Robert Iscove was nominated as worst director for FJtK, and Kim Fuller was nominated for worst screenplay.

Overall, FJtK received eight nominations, second only to Gigli and tying with The Cat in the Hat. To add some perspective, it beat out Dumb & Dumberer, which had only two.

However, FJtK was “lucky” in that it was nominated in so many categories alongside Gigli. Since Gigli won six, that left only two more. Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle took the worst sequel award. And The Cat in the Hat took the award for worst excuse for an actual movie.

But fear not! The Razzies could not simply let From Justin to Kelly go completely unrecognized. Therefore, they decided to give the movie a Special Governor’s Award for Distinguished Under-Achievement. The award was specifically given to Travis Payne for choreography that they said “was deemed too amusingly awful to go un-dissed.”

So congratulations to From Justin to Kelly, and here’s hoping that if either of them chooses to act in a movie again, it’s a better one.

For a full list of nominees and “winners,” check out the Razzies homepage.
