The Legend of William Hungby Sting7 -- 02/25/2004
View Printable version of this article Who would you wager has the buzz this year? The sassy Fantasia Barrino? Charismatic class-clown Matt Rogers? The quiet confidence of LaToya London? Reality show veteran Diana Degarmo? Wrong. So far, the breakout star of season three of American Idol is… are you ready for this? William Hung. Yes, that William Hung. Hung has been she-banging on camera for anyone who will have him. He’s been on Entertainment Tonight, Extra, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and a host of others. Not to mention his semi-regular performances at UC-Berkeley, where he has reportedly acquired a troupe of background dancers called “The Movement.” You probably recall 21-year-old Hung strolling in with that computer-geek strut in front of the judges, wearing a shirt of cryptically unnatural fibers, and spazzing all over Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.” Hung gave a performance that prompted Randy Jackson to cover his face with his paper and shattered Paula’s serious-judge face within seconds. Crusty Simon was not as amused, “you can’t dance, you can’t sing, what do want me to say?” Hung’s legend was born at that very moment. Undeterred by Simon’s bomb, he answered with startling confidence, “I’ve already done my best, I have no regrets.” Randy and Paula congratulated the attitude. Hung also added, “I have no professional training,” which even brought a smile to Simon, as he sarcastically gasped. 99 times out of 100 that is the end of the story. Not this time. Almost immediately, websites in his honor were erected. Hung was quickly becoming sought-after property. Then, the most sublimely ridiculous: fledgling music channel Fuse and Koch Entertainment offered Hung a recording contract and a “royalty check” (they called it, but it would have to be more of a signing bonus, since you have to actually have a product to earn royalties from it, but I digress) for $25,000. Hung did not definitively accept the offer, and no one is sure if he will. Smart move. William Hung is a civil engineering student, so clearly the kid is not stupid. My bet is Hung will ride out his fifteen minutes with glee, milk it for all it’s worth and who could blame him? I don’t think he wants to record until he feels like he should be recorded. Entertainment Tonight featured him working with a vocal coach, and he cites singing as nothing more than a hobby. That may be as far as Hung wants to go with it for now. He has time. Nonetheless, the legend of William Hung will be told and retold in the annals of American Idol history. Before William retires to the pages of lore, he will be seen Monday night, March 1 on American Idol’s special tribute to the grossly untalented.
