We’ll Be the Judge of That! – American Idol 3, February 24

by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 02/25/2004
After a horrendous Group 2, our judges almost quit in disgust. But we’ve pulled the panel back together for what turned out to be a much better Group 3. However, the panel never seems to quite make it to complete agreement. Read on to find out what the real judges have to say!

Well, Group 3 was definitely better than Group 2! All of our judges can agree on that much. However, that’s about where the agreement ends. By now you’ve read all of what happened on this week’s performance show and know that the on-site judges had to say. We’ve pulled our panel back together, though some threatened to quit in disgust after last week. Here they are to tell you what they really think: Phil Kural, Mike DeGeorge, Donna Reynolds, Paris Cosby, Betsy Wasser, and David Bloomberg.

Elizabeth LeTendre, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”

Phil: Well, I was a little nervous from the second I heard the song. We all know what it did to Jennifer Fuentes last year. However, since Elizabeth had the full band, I think she did a much better job than Jennifer, who only had the piano. It was a good performance, not great, but good. I like the sound of her voice though, I will say that.

Mike: Seriously, how many times do they have to tell these people not to sing Whitney? And if you do decide to sing Whitney, at least sing it well, and don’t try to BE Whitney. NEXT! (And of course, nobody mentions it when I do…)

Donna: She came out strong and her smile was certainly engaging. But, she shrieked a little too much for my taste and it seemed as though she was trying to make her voice bigger somehow. To her credit, she “owned” the stage and certainly has the performing skills. I noticed some flat notes but her range is decent and she has the “look.” I am glad she didn’t over-dance. So-so!

Paris: I didn’t like her outfit at all. She had a strong voice but at times it seemed like she was yelling at me more than singing to me. She definitely started the show out with a bang, there’s no denying that, and the audience really enjoyed it. I liked her well enough but it wasn’t a Disney magical moment for me.

Betsy: Entertainment Weekly said that Elizabeth has the best voice in the competition, so my expectations were high. But this week, she was good, but not great. Her voice was a little growly, but she made it work. Her dancing was cute, and she had good energy. I wish she had worn black stockings with her dress – it would have looked better. All in all, she was a breath of fresh air after last week’s performances, but not good enough to win.

David: She wants to show she’s not a dancer in a singing competition, so she sings a song about wanting to dance with somebody? Um… Anyway, there is something in her voice that I just don’t like with this song. It was a good overall performance, and it certainly was better than anybody last week, but there was still just something I didn’t like about her voice. Don’t ask me to explain it, I can’t.

Eric Yoder, “In the Still of the Night”

Phil: He wanted to show off his personality, and in my opinion, he picked the wrong song. Oh, and he’s no Clay, and there is no way that I think that he has the same kind of voice of Mr. Aiken. He does have a nice voice though, don’t get me wrong. However, I wouldn’t bet that he makes it to the next round. Although, I said the same thing about Matt, last week, and look what happened. Don’t count on it though.

Mike: Eric is from St. Louis. If you didn’t know that, watch the St. Louis Fox affiliate for about ten minutes and you’ll hear about it twenty times. He started off rushed and a bit rocky, but settled into a great voice. He almost sparkled on stage… this guy has got it, INCLUDING the personality.

Donna: Clay doesn’t have to worry about Eric. He does sound a lot like him though. Kind of eerie. This song was boring, however and really didn’t show me anything. He went off when he went to the falsetto and overall, I wasn’t wowed.

Paris: This guy is a little like Clay – he even sounds like him. I thought he started out slow but he got my attention about halfway through. I like him even though he’s a little showy. He’s cute. I’d vote for him a few times.

Betsy: Eric’s performance started out a little slow, but he really came into it at the end. He has a sweet tone about him that I bet girls will love. If he moves on in the competition, he should work hard to make sure he’s not compared to Clay, but is his own person. And I agree with Simon about his personality. Eric seems like a nice enough guy, but there’s nothing especially interesting about him aside from his voice. Still, his voice might be good enough to move on to the next round.

David: This song was supposed to show off his personality? So, what is his personality – something from the ‘50s? He showed good range, but that song choice could seriously hurt him. However, if Clay Nation adopts him, he could make it through.
