American Idol 3: Strictly Business

by Sting7 -- 01/29/2004
The initial auditions are over, and we are about to meet the real contenders for the American Idol crown. The Hollywood Phase can do a lot to help or hurt a contestant. How will new finalists like Sonny Kapu and Jon-Peter Lewis do?

Congratulations to all of us! We made it through the Bad Audition phase of American Idol! It hasn’t been too arduous, has it? We managed to make it through the Fooklings, the Scat Girls, and the Michael Recons, relatively undamaged!

Here comes the reward! Now it’s time to get down to business. The cast of thousands has been narrowed down to 117. Fox is reporting that the lower number gives them an opportunity to introduce us to more of the finalists before the Top 32.

The first part of that happens Monday, with American Idol: The Road to Hollywood. We will get to see good auditions from people who actually have a shot at winning the title! I think it’s an excellent call. Last year, the soap opera-esque meow-mix between Julia DeMato and Kimberly Caldwell virtually guaranteed their spots in the Top 12. Josh Gracin (the marine!), Corey Clark (the bad boy!), and Vanessa Olivarez (the punk girl!) also managed to ingrain themselves in our memories during this phase. It was also during this phase that Trenyce, Hadas, and few others reduced themselves to one name! Keep the erasers on stand-by!

But, let’s see if Fox can get it right this time. Let’s see if Fox can take us all the way through the journey of the eventual winner. They haven’t yet! Kelly Clarkson barely registered until her Round of Ten performance. Clay Aiken all but disappeared during the Hollywood phase. I make a point of looking for my Picks to Click, so I remember Clay dashing across the room to hug Frenchie when they both realized they made Top 32. We saw Ruben perform often in Hollywood, but he was clearly a "supporting character" in the drama. Kimberley Locke was reduced to Frenchie Davis’ sidekick. That was the Top 3!

This year, we have met some interesting characters, but I think Monday night will really tell us more about who our next American Idol is likely to be. Keep your eyes open! Maybe you’ll be able to say, ‘I knew it the moment I saw them!’
