Justin Guarini Sued over Car Accidentby David Bloomberg -- 11/10/2003
View Printable version of this article It looks like jetskis aren’t the only transportation device that original American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini needs to be more careful with – now we’ve moved up to trucks as well. Justin, who got unwanted attention this summer when he apparently had lost control of his jetski at a beach and almost hit a little girl (accounts vary on just how close he was to her), now has some more of that type of attention for something that happened over a year ago. He is being sued for running into the back of a car in Pennsylvania. According to news reports, Louis and Adrienne Maiatico, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, were stopped at a red light back on March 12, 2002, when Justin ran into the back of their car with his truck. Justin was cited by police for following too closely and while he was originally going to fight the ticket in court, he apparently decided it wasn’t worth coming back to Pennsylvania from L.A. to fight $100 ($25 fine, $75 court costs). Besides, let’s face it, when you hit somebody from behind and they are stopped at a red light, what kind of argument can you really muster? “They backed into me”? So, that should have been it. But now, a year and a half later, the Maiaticos have filed suit, claiming that Justin was looking at some papers in the car rather than watching the road. They also say he was driving too fast – though I have to wonder how they know that unless they had a radar gun facing out of their back bumper. As is somewhat standard in suits like this, they claim a back injury. In this case, that Mr. Maiatico injured his back and neck, plus his side. No information is currently available on why they waited so long to file the suit if there were indeed such injuries, and surprisingly, as of this writing The Smoking Gun website does not have the lawsuit posted (though I wouldn’t be surprised to see it there soon). The lawsuit seeks over $100,000 from Guarini. Apparently the Maiaticos have not been following Justin’s career very closely, or they would know that his self-titled debut album did not do well and the movie in which he and Kelly Clarkson starred, From Justin to Kelly, tanked. It seems more likely they are looking to collect from his insurance company than from him personally, though we do not have specific information on that. All in all, maybe Justin should just stay away from vehicles of any type for a little while. David Bloomberg is the Editor of Foxes On Idol, and can be reached at RNO@pobox.com.
