Fame’s Harlemm Lee to Have Debut Album Out November 11

by David Bloomberg -- 11/06/2003
Fame winner Harlemm Lee was supposed to win a single as part of his prize – but now he has a full album coming out! Want to know if your favorites from his time on Fame will be on the CD? Read on for details.

One of the questions we frequently get here at Foxes On Idol is, “What ever happened to XXXXX?” The X’s, of course, represent whichever former reality talent show participant the person wants to know about. Well, one that I had been wondering about for a little while now is Harlemm Lee, the winner of Fame and, in many minds, the only real reason the show was ever worth watching to begin with. Now we have an answer.

Harlemm won Fame, along with its myriad of prizes. One of those prizes was supposed to be a single release on Wire Records. It seems, however, that Wire decided to go even further than that – they are releasing an entire album, Introducing Harlemm Lee.

Mind you, this really isn’t the world’s introduction to Harlemm – as Foxes On Idol noted back in July, Harlemm Lee actually appears to be Gerry Woo, who had released an album through Polydor back in the late ‘80s – though his bio on the Wire Records site doesn’t mention that. But still, we’ll consider it his introduction as Harlemm Lee in any case.

The album will be out this coming Tuesday, November 11, and among the songs are featured several that he performed on Fame, such as “Careless Whisper,” “Get Here,” “Greatest Love of All,” “Tomorrow” (from Annie), “Lean on Me” (well, maybe – the song is listed as “Lean on Him” in the Amazon track listing, but I suspect it’s a typo), and “I Love You Love Me,” the original song that he sang to end the final episode. Sorry, no “Vogue,” as he performed in the final four episode, where he added his own personalized rapping.

Other songs will be “Blessed My Soul Again,” “Destiny,” “Let’s Get Serious,” “Jasmine Rain,” and “When I Need You.”

Harlemm won in part because of his highly stylized and personalized versions of the songs he performed, and it will be interesting to see how those translate to an album format.

One interesting point to note is that although one of the prizes listed during the show was a role in the Broadway version of Fame, Harlemm apparently is not accepting that one, at least for now. Odds are that he was too busy making his CD.

Harlemm will be appearing on AM Northwest in Portland, Oregon, on November 12, running from 9-10 AM on ABC affiliate KATU. He will be on San Jose’s NBC affiliate show Bay Area Today from 10-11 AM on November 18. And he will perform live at Dream Nightclub in Washington, D.C., on November 27, in an event to honor former president Bill Clinton.

As always, Foxes On Idol will keep you up to date on any news about Harlemm and other contestants on the various shows.
