Updates on CDs from Clay, Ruben, and Justin

by David Bloomberg -- 06/03/2003
Clay’s and Ruben’s CD-singles were originally supposed to come out today. We knew that Clay’s had been postponed, but what about Ruben’s? Next week will be a huge American Idol week!

Imagine my surprise when I found out that Ruben’s CD-singles, which were supposed to come out today, June 3, had not yet shipped from Amazon.com and no stores appeared to have them. We already knew that Clay’s CD-single had been delayed for a week, but the last time I had checked, Ruben’s was on track to come out on time. However, if you look right now, it’s been postponed to June 10 as well. So if you ordered it and were wondering why you hadn’t gotten it yet, now you know.

That means three American Idol CDs will be released a week from today, as Justin Guarini’s debut album comes out then as well.

The change to Ruben’s release date is not the only modification. As Bruce Barker discussed in his first “Idol Chartwatch” column, due to the audience response, “On the Wings of Love” was replaced on Clay’s single with “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” But even beyond that, “Bridge” is now listed as the primary single, rather than the new song, “This Is the Night.”

It is not yet clear if producers plan to “release” both singles on Clay’s and Ruben’s CDs separately – including making videos for both – as was done for Kelly Clarkson. It might make sense to do so in Clay’s case, but in Ruben’s, we’re not even sure if “Superstar” is a new recording or if it’s the same one that can be heard on the American Idol 2 love songs CD (or if there is a difference).

As for Justin’s CD, the track list has been out for a little while now, but in case you haven’t looked it up, here it is:

  1. One Heart Too Many
  2. I Saw Your Face
  3. Be A Heartbreaker
  4. Unchained Melody
  5. Sorry
  6. How Will You Know
  7. Inner Child
  8. Condition Of My Heart
  9. Doin' Things (We're Not Supposed To)
  10. If You Wanna
  11. Thinking Of You
  12. Get Here
  13. Timeless (with Kelly Clarkson)

(It should be noted that “If You Wanna” does not appear on the track list provided at Amazon.com, but is listed at other locations.)

Like Kelly Clarkson’s premiere, several of Justin’s songs are remakes – “Unchained Melody” and “Get Here,” at least – though Justin's are remakes of more well-known songs. And, as Bruce noted in his column on Justin, it is still unclear which will be the designated single – which will end up competing on the charts with both Clay’s and Ruben’s. Considering that From Justin to Kelly comes out a mere ten days later than these three CDs (it was supposed to be June 13, but was pushed back as well, to June 20), producers had better hope that American Idol fans have a lot of spending cash available.

You can order any (or all) of the CDs at Amazon.com:

Clay’s Single: “Bridge Over Troubled Water/This Is The Night”

Ruben’s Single: “Flying Without Wings/Superstar”

Justin’s Album

Kelly’s Album, Thankful

Season 2: All-Time Classic American Love Songs
