The Odds on Ruben, Clay, and the Guy Suing to Stop the Show

by David Bloomberg -- 05/20/2003
Fans are debating who will win – Clay or Ruben. They aren’t the only ones. Bookies are wondering as well. And then there’s the guy suing the show to get it stopped altogether. What do you suppose his odds are?

Fans are not the only ones wondering who the next American Idol will be. Online bookies are trying to figure it out as well. And, frankly, so are many others who are using every method of analysis available.

And then there’s the guy who is suing Fox, the producers, and even Simon Cowell and who doesn’t want the final to even be shown! Yes, it’s true. British press is reporting that Harry Keane Jr., of Dallas, has asked a judge to halt the series because he came up with the idea first. Mind you, by “first” this would mean not only before this season of American Idol, not only before the first season last summer, but even before Pop Idol aired in England months prior to that!

Yet Mr. Keane has apparently waited until now to file his lawsuit and ask for the final two shows to be stopped. Perhaps he didn’t notice it at first – after all, it’s not like the show has been a mega-hit with press all over the place or anything… A spokesman from Fox called the suit “ridiculous” and I tend to agree.

So, getting back to the finalists themselves, reports are that online bookies are currently favoring Ruben – slightly. However, we have to remember that it is the CD-buying public who American Idol is supposed to be catering to. And they are making a somewhat different statement, it appears.

On Amazon.com, as soon as the singles for Clay and Ruben became available for pre-order, Clay’s rocketed to the top of the charts while Ruben’s lingered for a while. This may point to a more organized fanbase for Clay, but the fact remains that Clay’s single is, as of this writing, ranked #1 on Amazon while Ruben’s is ranked 42. (It is unclear if both singles will actually be released or if they have simply made them both available so they can quickly release the one by whomever wins. However, both now have cover photos as well, if that means anything.)

Taking data from the combined RealityNewsOnline and Foxes On Idol links to Amazon.com, pre-orders for Clay’s single have, to date, out-sold pre-orders for Ruben’s with a nine to one ratio. So if I had to look at the odds, I would have to say they are strongly in favor of Clay.

And strongly against Mr. Keane’s lawsuit.

If you haven’t ordered your copy of either single yet, now is your chance:

Clay’s Single: “This Is The Night/On The Wings Of Love”

Ruben’s Single: “Flying Without Wings/Superstar”
