'American Idol' Discovers New Winner: The Re-Dial Buttonby Rosanne Simunovic -- 04/30/2003
View Printable version of this article Well… the "votes" are in! The American public has had their say and we are down to four finalists on American Idol… but I digress. American Idol discovered a new talent last evening… the ability to redial and speed dial votes continuously for two hours with the sole objective of allowing mediocre musical talent to move ahead of musical excellence. What a concept! I think the U.S. Government should have a look at this innovative technological advancement for all things mediocre. Forget about principles and moral conscience… it's too restricting. Guidelines and rules… bah bye! When I first tuned in to American Idol this year (I didn't have the opportunity to watch the show last year), I just assumed that the voting process would utilize the democratic system: one vote per person. Silly me! What was I thinking?? Let's have millions of people vote a bzillion times over a two hour period… good for ratings, great for advertisers, certainly great for AT&T… but, alas, not so great for the some of the American Idol contestants. So, who allowed this preposterous and undemocratic process to evolve and why did the producers, the American audience and, more importantly, the contestants tolerate this policy? There is no logic or rationale to explain the acceptance of such a ludicrous voting procedure. Think about it… you could ask perhaps a 100 buddies to hook up a bunch of computers to redial incessantly for two hours. However, the bottom line here is that you only received 100 INDIVIDUAL votes. Oh yes, that's democracy alright… yay for technology and nay for brains and moral values. So now charismatic and talented Trenyce is gone, magnetic and extraordinarily gifted Ruben was humiliated, and Joshua is trying to figure out how he is going to survive another week pretending to enjoy the American Idol experience. Nothing in life is fair, but this is beyond "nothing"… this is American Idol… the American Musical Dream… the search for excellence. Ryan Seacrest said it all when he stated that musical careers are at risk here. Excellence has to win in the end and we need to see, especially in the final two performers, young gifted artists that conduct themselves with class, with dignity, with intelligence and with respect for their audience and the panel of judges. Nothing less should be tolerated, nothing less should be acceptable and nothing less should wear the American Idol crown. To Trenyce and Ruben… you are stars. You are committed gifted musicians with genuine character and superb talent that will transcend the American Idol experience.
