At Last! Information about Kelly’s Album

by David Bloomberg -- 04/08/2003
Finally, we are getting a little bit of information about Kelly’s album, due out in a week. What songs will be on it? Did she write any of them? And which American Idol co-star helps out on one? Plus info on what else Kelly is up to, including the movie release date.

Some information on the long-awaited Kelly Clarkson album, Thankful, is finally coming out, as is other news about Kelly.

The album is due out in one week – April 15. RCA has released a track list for it that includes new versions of “A Moment Like This” and “Before Your Love,” plus ten new songs:

  • The Trouble With Love Is
  • Miss Independent
  • Low
  • Some Kind of Miracle
  • What's Up Lonely
  • Just Missed the Train
  • Beautiful Disaster
  • You Thought Wrong
  • Thankful
  • Anytime
  • A Moment Like This
  • Before Your Love

The first single has also been finally determined – “Miss Independent,” a song co-written with Christina Aguilera. Apparently, Aguilera began working on the song with producer Rhett Lawrence for her own Stripped album. But it wasn’t actually finished. When Lawrence went to work with Kelly, they finished it together. The song is not a ballad like her first two singles. And we will all be able to hear it this Wednesday on the AI Results show.

Kelly was hoping to be able to get some of her own compositions onto this album, and while apparently she did not solely write any of them, “Miss Independent” is one of three she co-wrote. The other two are “Thankful” and “You Thought Wrong,” both of which were co-written by Babyface; Justin Timberlake apparently had some part in that as well. In addition, “You Thought Wrong” has a guest appearance by Tamyra Gray (this shouldn’t be surprising since Tamyra had earlier indicated that she was writing songs with Babyface).

Meanwhile, in addition to her appearance on this week’s Results show, she will also be at the Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards on Saturday. However, her movie, From Justin to Kelly, will not open later this month as originally planned. Instead, it has been postponed to June 13.

According to a spokesman, they moved the premiere back so they could open it when school is over – obviously hoping for a large attendance from that audience. However, I have to wonder if perhaps they didn’t also do it so they could release a soundtrack album that would not be out at exactly the same time as Kelly’s new album and the new AI2 All-Time Classic American Love Songs album. There had been some outrage by fans when it appeared that there would not be a soundtrack album for the movie. While we still don’t know of any such plans, it would seem that such an album would almost be a given in this situation. Why create a movie starring the two finalists in a singing competition, put them into a musical, and not release a soundtrack?
