Trenyce: How Could This Possibly Happen?by Phil Kural -- 04/03/2003
View Printable version of this article Usually, I try not to make any comments about American Idol except to my friends or other writers for the site. I usually leave that to the experts, my esteemed colleagues Sting7 and David Bloomberg. However, the vote this week rocked my world, and felt it necessary to make some comments. First off, let me say that from the beginning, Trenyce has been my favorite of the American Idol finalists. Heck, she was one of my favorites all the way back when the first semi-finals show aired and she sang “Love Sneaking Up On You.” There was just something about her that made me feel all warm inside, much like the way Ruben made Gladys Knight feel. Trenyce’s smooth, sultry voice just knows how to keep the attention of the crowd and root for her. I know that’s what it did for me. Not one time did she have a performance that made me say “that stunk” or “Trenyce is losing it.” Honestly because I don’t think she has ever begun to lose what I think makes her a true star. I was scared that after she didn’t make it into the finals she would be pushed to the wayside and not be picked for the Wildcard show. It was so far back, I was afraid that the judges would forget her and go for someone that seemed more high profile, like Equoia. However, that was not the case. Trenyce DID make the Wildcard show and she made it into the finals with a little help from Paula Abdul. I don’t think she really needed the help though because her performance of “Let’s Stay Together” was right on the money. No mistakes, great performance, and a winning personality to top it all off. When it was Motown week she sang “Come See About Me” and once again had a performance without a hitch. I’m the first to admit that as a young white male, I am not good at getting my “groove on,” but when she was performing, I definitely had my mojo working. The way this girl performs just forces you to get up and feel it. Just when I thought she couldn’t blow me away anymore, Trenyce performed “I Have Nothing” during Movie Soundtrack week. I swear on my life, it was the best performance of the night. Many will say that Clay and Ruben outshined my girl, but I beg to differ. She definitely did Whitney proud on that one. Trenyce did not miss one note on that song and it left me breathless. I was without words, and that is not common for me at all! Country week had Trenyce doing “I Need You,” which is actually a song I didn’t like. Trenyce MADE me like it. I will admit that it was not her best performance, but she made it work. Country is a hard genre to sing if you don’t have the right voice but like I said, Trenyce did the best with what she had. Even though it was not her best performance, she still did not finish in the bottom 3. Let me preface this next part by saying that none of the people in the bottom three this week deserved to be there. Kim Locke was simply amazing, Carmen sang the best she ever has, and Trenyce was right on her game. I might as well tell you who I think SHOULD have been the bottom 3: Josh (even though he is another one of my favorites), Rickey, and Kim C. Not because I don’t like any of them, but because they were just not up to par last night. When discussing the bottom three from last night though, I’m not so much concerned with Kim and Carmen because they have had bad performances in the past. Trenyce has been unbelievably consistent. What went wrong? What happened? Why was Trenyce in the bottom 3? Her rendition of “I’m Every Woman” tore the house down. At first I wasn’t sure how it was possible that America didn’t think the same way. Then I remember something: Trenyce and her little scuffle some years back about a shoplifting incident. Honestly, I didn’t even read the story because I don’t care. It happened years ago, and her slate was wiped clean. This may be the reason she ended up in the position that she did. Is it fair to not vote for her because of this? Have we not all made mistakes when we were younger? I think it is ridiculous if you love her voice but refuse to vote for Trenyce based on her past. That is simply unfair. For all we know any of the finalists could have done some bad things that have not yet been dug up by The Smoking Gun. Simply put, I am urging every Trencye fan who is reading this to vote for her. Vote for her twice, heck, vote for her five or fifty times if you feel like it! This girl can sing, and it is unfair to have her eliminated from the competition because of something that happened years ago. To anyone who is a Trenyce fan and didn’t vote for her based on what happened in the past, shame on you! That is not a fan and you should know that. Get back on the good side; send her a vote next week. Even if her performance is not her best next week, which I doubt, you should still vote for her. You owe it to Trenyce. And besides, since the votes are combined from this week you’re really voting for both performances. Admit that you know her performance this week was awesome. This is really out of my hands, but I feel it is necessary that someone sticks up for her. She has too much talent, way more than some of the others who are still in this, to go home so early. I implore everyone to send her a vote. Do it for her, do it for me, and do it for you. Like I said though, this is out of my hands, and I will leave it at that. Hopefully I got myself across to a few people. I eagerly away to see the results of next week’s vote. Phil Kural is a junior at Temple University, and can be reached at pkural@astro.temple.edu.
