We’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 7, July 21

by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 07/22/2010
Another week, another injury on So You Think You Can Dance. What do our judges have to say about the five remaining dancers, including contemporary dancer Robert (right), still on their feet and dancing!

You’ve heard the Nigel’s and the other judges’ comments already, but don’t forget to also check out Jenn’s recap on Reality News Online. Now read on to see what our two Foxes on Idol critics had to say about this week’s performances.

Lauren & All-Star Twitch: Hip Hop – NappyTabs

Erika:So, we were all supposed to worry about Blondie having to get street in this number. But I wasn’t concerned because Lauren has grown and improved week by week. At this point I have faith she’ll nail whatever she’s given.

What is there to say about this dance except wow! WOW! This was so far beyond what I was expecting out of Lauren. The entire routine was completely and utterly amazing. That tumbleweed move was just sick! How does she move that way? I am so freakin’ impressed. The choreography was amazing, but the dancing was spectacular. Seriously, Lauren looked like a hip hop dancer to me. I’d put her up against any of the female hip hop dancers I’ve seen and lots of the male dancers too. I’d love to see her and Comfort dance together.

Oh, and let me just say, if Twitch could pay me a house call wearing that leather and denim get up it would pretty much make my life complete!

Terri: Okay, I agree, Erika! That was awesome! Not gonna lie, I didn’t look at Twitch at all during that entire routine. I had to stop myself, remind myself Twitch was actually there, only to have it occur to me that I didn’t care and just wanted to watch Lauren. I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t getting the hot vibe from the skanky cowgirl thing she had going, and that it was actually that she had some freakin’ swagga! This number didn’t have the explosion factor that, say, the Adam Freaking Wong hip-hop routine had, but that was in the choreography. This was just cool. Ridiculously cool. I sorta fell in love during this routine.

When was the last time Lauren had a bad performance? But the new guy judge should have cut down the like-fest to just gushing about Lauren’s awesomeness! There was one thing I did hate about this number – Twitch’s color contacts. Don’t mask those beautiful brown eyes again, baby.

José & All-Star Allison: Contemporary – Sonya Tayah

Erika:While watching the package before the dance I was thinking that José lucked out getting Sonya as his choreographer. She’s so quirky that her choreography might help mask his technical weaknesses.

Getting to the dance, I really liked the idea of the piece and it was so interesting in its execution. It really wasn’t about the dancing, though. It was about the connection between José and Allison. He did very well with that connection and the partnering. José achieved the strange moves and lines the dance required of him. But, honestly, Allison did all the real dancing.

José did well, but Sonya gave him the moves that he could do. I’m pretty amazed that the judges actually not only agreed with me, but said so. They finally gave José a real critique. He is just not up to the level of the rest of the dancers remaining in the competion.

Terri: I wanted this routine to be the thing that silenced people who were getting irritated with José lasting as long as he has (including me). José performed the crap out of this routine, but I was bummed that it didn’t showcase “conventional” dancing just because the routine didn’t ask for it. People who love José will use his great performance and commitment to champion him. The critics are going to poo-poo this effort because, as Erika noted, there wasn’t really any dancing. I’m with Mia; I wanted to see awesome technical dancing here. While I didn’t see it, it’s because it wasn’t in the choreography, and as irritated as I am, I can’t fault José for it.

Robert & All-Star Lauren: Jazz – Tyce Diorio

Erika:OK, I totally dug the bondage-y shirt that Robert was wearing. I also dug the leg licking and other seduction stylings of this dance. Holy NC-17, this routine was not for children! I had no idea Tyce could do something so interesting and eccentric and sexy! I really adored this in every way! The dancing was ridiculously good. It was slinky and sensual and smoooooooth. And both Robert and Lauren were sexy as hell! And you’ll have to excuse me while I go take a cold shower...

Terri:Question of the Day: Who has the better ass, All-Star Lauren or Dancetestant Lauren? I liked this number a lot, but even while the routine was happening, I wondered if I would remember it by the end of the episode. People who love them some stories may not like it because it didn’t have a direction but, Erika, you are right! It was way sexy. And not skanky sexy – SEXY sexy. Despite all this sexiness, though, I never forgot that Robert is a fantastic dancer.

Adéchiké’s Solo

Erika:Of course, Adéchiké’s solo was glorious. He was strong and passionate and his lines were so astounding. He brings a masculinity and maturity to his solo dancing that the choreographers haven’t brought out in him yet. I really enjoyed this solo and am very glad the dancers are doing solos again this week.

Terri: I wonder if Adéchiké always goes by Adé, but didn’t want to get mixed up with All-Star Adé in my mind. Adéchiké’s solo showed good performance and musicality, but I have to disagree a bit with Erika here. I want to see great technical feats at this point in the competition. Of all these contemporary dancers, Adéchiké needs to stand out. He does more popping and locking during his solos and intros, which is fine, but I wanted to see how his technical ability is superior to his competitors. Didn’t see it.

Kent & All-Star Kathryn: Jazz – Sonya Tayah

Erika:Oh, I was looking forward to this threesome! I truly believed that Sonya would bring out something amazing in Kent. She has such a sense of what is inside of the dancers and makes the most of them.

And I was so right! This was just fantastic! Kent was having a blast and so I had a blast watching it. This was simply the coolest I’ve ever seen Kent and I loved it. The dancing was so ridiculously amazing. He did pull a lot of overly dramatic faces, but I didn’t mind because I think they came from his joy of the dance. I don’t think there is anything more to say because I’d just be gushing and gushing some more.
