We’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 7, July 14by Foxes On Idol Judging Staff -- 07/15/2010
View Printable version of this article By now we know you’ve already read Jenn’s RNO recap and you just want to know what Foxes On Idol judges Erika Vaughan and Terri Smith think. So let’s get right to it! Lauren & Mark: Cultural/Tahitian - Tiana Liufau Erika: Yay! Mark! A few weeks ago I would have been dreading seeing Lauren’s perkiness trying to dance with Mark’s darkness. But she has proven herself to be able to do the many styles she’s been handed with such maturity and surprising versatility that I weren’t skeered at all. Unfortunately, I didn’t love this at all. It’s interesting in an “on vacation with fam” kinda way. But I hope they retire this style after this. That said, Lauren and Mark both did a very good job of course. Lauren really shook her ass and her tail feathers were really movin’. But it wasn’t particularly exciting to me… even if her hips did get our resident perv, Nigel, going. It was a waste of Mark but Lauren made the most of it. Terri: Can we talk about Lauren’s butt for a minute? I had no idea she was so stacked in the back! Lauren’s butt pretty much carried this entire routine. When I was trying to take in the routine as a whole, I was essentially drawn to Lauren’s butt. I respect her butt. Her butt did an excellent job in this routine. It shook, it moved in circles, it bounced a bit. It helped that her butt was clad in such a bright eye-catching color. I was stunned that her butt kept with the rhythm and also helped her from not falling during some of the points where she had to shake and stay balanced. Lauren’s butt gets full marks tonight! I didn’t really notice Mark, to be honest. How sweet was Lauren when she thanked the choreographers! Did you giggle when you noticed that Lauren’s headdress is only about two inches taller than Cat? I did. Amount of times I said “butt” in this review: 8. Adéchiké & Anya: Salsa - Liz Lira & Danny Davalos Erika: When he pulled Anya as his partner my first thought was that he had the possibility of keeping up with her sexiness… if he can channel a sexy man and not the same funky head-bobbling character he’s been pulling out for the past two weeks. Yikes! He almost dropped her in that first lift and it made me so nervous I could barely watch the rest. I had to rewind and try again. He didn’t move with a latin beat at all. He wasn’t digging into the floor like the salsa needs. But it was fast and fun and he was strong and didn’t look like a contemporary dancer in the least. It was actually pretty impressive. It wasn’t my favorite salsa routine but he did very well, indeed. Terri: Um… yeah… The first lift was kinda rough when he caught her, but I’m happy no one got seriously injured (we’re running out of dancers!). There were parts of the routine I didn’t really get. While Anya was in the back bend and going up and down Adéchiké’s leg, what was supposed to be happening? It may very well have happened like it was supposed to, but it just looked botched. I didn’t like this routine. The routine itself looked like a series of tricks without any sort of connection. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not supposed to have a story or anything, but I wanted some sort of connection to all the other elements of the routine. While the tricks were really cool, and they nearly pulled it off, I didn’t love the routine as a whole. Adéchiké said that he thought “bottom three” when he saw the routine, which is funny, because so did I. Jose & Courtney: Broadway - Joey Dowling Erika: I’m not a huge fan of Joey’s routines and I didn’t have a lot of faith that Jose could pull off a Broadway routine. But she used one of my favorite songs so I decided to try to keep an open mind. But all that open-mindedness was for naught. I found it awkward. I hated the constant pained look on his face. It didn’t look as if he was lonely or longing – just ill. His dancing was barely so-so. I really felt like the dance never got started. I had to go check out John C. Reilly in the movie version of Chicago to remind myself of how wonderful this piece can be. The fact is that Jose has been getting by with his charm and not his dancing so far. And this showed every single weakness of his dancing and why he isn’t doing what Legacy did so much better. Joey didn’t do him any favors with her choreography. It wasn’t good enough to make up for his lack of training. Terri: Go away, Joey Dowling! The arrangement of this song was horrible! Not a fan of this routine. Courtney essentially just did her own thing the whole time, so it was pretty easy for me to ignore her, and José as the focus left much to be desired. I completely agreed with the judges. Yeah, José’s adorable and all, and he really did have flashes where he got into the character, but he just kinda schlepped around through the whole routine. He definitely tried, but his lack of training was heavily exposed in this routine. While it may be enough for viewers at home to realize his limits, the “oh, it breaks my heart” needs to stop. I’m pissed that I don’t have Alex Freaking Wong anymore, and it’s no more Mrs. Nice Judge. Robert & Allison: Contemporary - Travis Wall Erika: What more could we ask for? Robert, Allison and Travis dancing a routine that meant everything to both Travis and Robert. I expected to cry and sure enough, they pulled the tears out of me. Robert moved with such strength and passion! And he inhabited every instant with so much pain, beauty, and love. And how many pirouettes was that? Six or seven in a row, I think. This dance went by so fast but with such grace. And they both danced from their souls. I don’t know how many ways to say how wonderful this was for me. My mother has fallen ill and had to relearn to walk three times now, so this hit me so very deeply and personally. I will be thinking about this for a very long time to come. Terri: My power went out! So I missed this dance. 1 2 3 Next-->View Printable version of this article
