American Idol 9: Which Idol Will Fall Sixth?by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 04/20/2010
View Printable version of this article It seems there was widespread surprise that Michael Lynche actually needed saving a couple of weeks ago – but no one seems at all surprised that Andrew Garcia was finally sent packing. Katie Stevens, who seemed to be on a bit of a roll, did register on the shock scale, but the needle merely hiccupped. So, how did David (whose comments appear in red) and I do last week? We don’t know! Those tricky Idol people didn’t actually give us a bottom three this time! Obviously, Katie and Andrew were there – joined, most likely, by Aaron or Tim. I went with a bottom three of Aaron, Tim, and Andrew, with Andrew and Tim leaving. David went with Aaron, Andrew, and Katie in the bottom three, Aaron and Andrew out. David obviously got two of the bottom three right (since two of them actually left), I got one eliminated contestant right and probably one of the bottom three. Good thing we’re not keeping score, eh David? Don’t worry, I keep score – when I’m winning, that is. But yes, it was sneaky of Idol to not say who else was near the low end of the votes. If it was one of the usual bottom-dwellers, it’s probably no big deal. If it was somebody who would have been surprising, though, a near-miss could have been a necessary wake-up call for that singer’s fans. For that reason and because I think Idol would have wanted the added drama by showing a front-runner in a close situation, I suspect it was a usual suspect. Well, that’s what we know. It feels like the worm may be beginning to turn a bit. Even our rock solid picks aren’t as sure as they once were! I feel confident that Crystal Bowersox will be nowhere near the bottom three next week. I feel almost as confident that Lee DeWyze is safe from elimination. That’s about all I feel confident about! I’m sure about Crystal. And… um… well, that’s it! I agree that Lee is probably in no danger – but we felt that way about Big Mike a couple weeks ago and look what happened! Two contestants I felt so sure about just a couple of weeks ago seem to be less steady as they once were. Siobhan Magnus has never been in the bottom three, and this being Inspirational Song Week, Siobhan and her vocal gifts should be fine. This could be the week she reasserts herself in this competition. What she has going for her is, of course, that voice, her unthreatening quirkiness, and her willingness to defend herself. I think people see some of themselves in our favorite oddball. I think this week will be a telling one for Siobhan. If she sucks it up and just blows everybody away, it will be the start of a run for the finals. If she starts doubting or getting down on herself because of the judges’ comments, she could enter a death-spiral. She also has to be careful of the difference between defending herself and getting pissy with the judges, as it’s a very fine line. I think she’s done okay so far, but I’m not the only judge here – and if she pushes it any further, she could risk alienating some viewers. Then there is Michael Lynche, who probably learned a valuable lesson with his close call. There is a much more humble air to Michael now. Even his vocals are a bit more restrained, which works to his advantage. The judges clearly don’t want runs Olympics in his songs. He’s smart to listen. I think his fan base will continue to work overtime to keep him safe. The scare is still too fresh! Agreed on the fans – he is definitely safe this week, and probably next. So, by elimination, that means that Casey, Aaron, and Tim would have to be the bottom three! Is this your bottom three David? Wow, we got to the bottom three that quickly?! I guess we’re really getting down there in numbers. It would seem you are correct! Choosing between the bottom three on my list, I am envisioning Casey being sent back to the couches first, though this could be a tricky week for him. Looking at that list of songs, I don’t see many that lend themselves to electric blues guitar – Casey’s weapon of choice. Casey has shown that he can just sit there and sing, but it’s not what he’s comfortable with, and that brings inherent risks. If he tries “Walking On Sunshine,” I am taking a header off my balcony! Don’t jump! Seriously, though, Casey is in kind of a weird position. He’s been doing the same thing so often that it’s kind of gotten boring. But when he doesn’t do the same thing, the risks are great for him. I do think he’ll be safe this week, but the way he handles this particular set of songs could be very telling for the rest of this season for him. Tim Urban is growing in confidence. He should be – he’s had a good couple of weeks, but Inspirational Songs is going to require delivering on the vocals as job number one. He can’t mask his deficiencies behind other dynamics, and he’s one bad performance away from being Timjaya again. Aaron’s inexperience is beginning to expose him. He’s a nice kid, but as the bar gets higher, he looks more and more like he’s just not ready yet. Frankly, if he doesn’t leave this week, it will just be a one week delay. Once again, I can’t argue with either of these assessments. I do think Tim’s fans will keep him around this week no matter how he does. But like Casey, his performance here will be a huge factor in what happens within the next couple weeks. As for Aaron? He’s toast. So we agree! To recap, our bottom three is made up of Casey, Aaron, and Tim. We believe Casey will be sent to safety while think Tim’s surge in popularity has a week of juice left in it and Aaron will be the next to go.
