American Idol 9: Which Idol Will Fall Third?

by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 03/30/2010
The internet is buzzing about last week’s performances – for all the wrong reasons. The top eleven produced one of the sleepiest weeks in Idol history. The bar will be raised for the rest of the season, but who will crack under the pressure? Has Andrew Garcia (right, with a not-very-happy-looking Ryan) run out of time? Which Idol will fall next?

Last week, our hopefuls were given a voluminous catalog of Billboard number ones to choose from. That was a number one from any of the dozens of charts Billboard ranks each week! All that made the song choices so puzzling and resulted in a week of mostly forgettable performances, though we wish a couple of those performances were more forgettable.

I (Sting7, writing in black text – and David will join me in red text) definitely want to forget Paige Miles’ “Against All Odds” (once referred to as the Song of Death, because contestants were routinely shown the exit after they sang it), it seemed like she knew it was over by the time she finished the first verse. I had high hopes for Paige, but she never measured up to them. Her survival truly was against all odds, and now she is gone.

I, on the other hand, never really had any hopes for Paige, other than the hope that she would quickly leave my TV set. She hung on for weeks longer than I expected, and for reasons I still cannot fully explain. I did know why she lost, though, and I explained those reasons here.

By the very nature of being a number one song, these are songs we’ve heard a lot. Why most of the contestants chose not to add a single new thing to them can only mean they were playing to survive, not to win. There was no reason Siobhan should be singing “Superstition,” which is better left to the Kim Caldwells of the world. Not that there is anything wrong with the Stevie Wonder classic, it just presented no challenge to the vocal skills Ms. Magnus possesses. There was no reason Aaron Kelly should be singing a song as inflexible as “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Neither Aaron nor the song was suitably served. If this kind of game play continues, this could be a miserable season!

In better news, David and I did pretty well with our predictions. I got two of my bottom three correct. David nailed all three of his! Woohoo! Both of us figured Tim Urban’s ride was finally over. Not so. Tim bought himself another week somehow. It figures – I finally gave Paige some credit and she went out and made herself even worse than Tim!

After such an inspiring week (I’m pretty sure that was sarcasm), there was nothing given to us to change our minds about what we thought last week. Crystal Bowersox, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, and Casey James are all still looking rock solid. Lee Dewyze is perhaps a single notch below them.

I can’t really find anything to argue with there.

Didi Benami is still looking for the formula. Thus far, she hasn’t really distinguished herself and the frustration is beginning to show. Aaron Kelly seems to be surprising himself. I’m almost willing to concede that maybe his fan base is expanding beyond grandmas and tweeners. I don’t know if I am ready to start calling him David Archuleta yet though, Ryan Seacrest!

I think Didi is on the downward slide to Idol oblivion and agree that Aaron is definitely on the upswing. Unless something drastically changes, we won’t have Didi to kick around for very much longer.

Andrew Garcia’s clock continues to tick. It’s amazing how much momentum you can get from one Idol moment, and I think now it’s appropriate to call that wickedly clever performance of “Straight Up” an Idol Moment. He hasn’t given us anything else to hang our hats on since then. I think he may have three weeks left at this rate.

Honestly, you may be overly generous with that. I know I’ve been a bigger supporter of him sticking around, but I think his run is nearing its end. And the thing is, sometimes those for whom we had high hopes can crash and burn more quickly than those for whom we never had any hopes to begin with.

I’m basically thinking of how he compares to Tim Urban. Tim came in as number 25 in a 24-person field. He has never been any good. There are no expectations that he should be. But one thing he has done is ham it up and have a good time. Andrew? Not so much. It’s definitely been painful to hear them both sing, but it’s been more painful to see Andrew try and try and just not get pack to the peak he was once on. Because of that, it would not surprise me if the voters may actually keep Tim around longer than Andrew! I don’t know that I’m ready to predict that as of yet, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it were to happen.

Katie Stevens seems to be getting her feet beneath her, but is it too late? Her “Big Girls Don’t Cry” was pretty good, but not enough to keep her from the bottom three. This means she’s going to have to nail something to wall to turn around her fate.

That result means one of two things in my eyes. Either she has no real fan base to speak of and therefore will soon be gone, or else the fans she has thought she was safe and didn’t dial enough. If it’s the latter, last week might have been enough of a scare to keep her out of the bottom three this week. I’ll have to mull that one over.

I am utterly without advice for Tim Urban. Despite what David said a little while ago, I am as sure that he is the next to go as I am sure water evaporates in the sun. To be complete, Katie and Andrew will join Tim and the bottom three, and the torture will end for us and Tim this week. David?

Dang, that wasn’t very much time to mull. I think I’ll take a break and go for a walk so I can think about this some more. Hang on a bit…

OK, I’m back. Unfortunately, no great light bulb went on over my head. There is no doubt that Tim is the obvious choice to leave this week. Do I believe the obvious choice will leave, though? You know what, since Paige was obvious (at least after her performance!) last week and she went, I will go ahead and stick with the obvious (even though Tim hasn’t performed yet this week – there is nothing to make me believe he will suddenly become, you know, good). So Tim will go home. I will also agree with Sting that it’s finally time for Andrew to hit the bottom three. But along with those two guys, I think Didi may also hit the bottom three instead of Katie.
