American Idol 9: Which Idol Will Fall Second?

by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 03/23/2010
The saga of the haves and have-nots continues as Lacey Brown told her “story” and found herself unworthy of saving. There are 11 left with dreams of the title… or at least making the tour! Will the bell toll next for Paige Miles (right)? Which Idol will fall next?

Congratulations to all of us for surviving Rolling Stones week! With some of the contestants, we got “Satisfaction,” others had us screaming “Gimme Shelter,” and we came to realize that “You Can’t Always Get What You Want!”

We said a merciful goodbye to Lacey Brown, who just seemed lost as to how to get her musical point across. David already told us about it in great detail why Lacey Brown lost, and his will be the final word on that. For any more of his words here, remember that they will be in red type while Sting7’s will be in regular black font.

Lacey didn’t do us many favors before she left! While I predicted a bottom three of Andrew Garcia, Tim Urban, and Katie Stevens, David saw a bottom three of Tim, Katie, and Lacey. That’s as close as we got, as neither of us picked Lacey to go home. I only connected on Tim, while David got two out of three, which Meat Loaf says ain’t bad, David!

I’ll take it, especially because at least I put Lacey in the bottom three!

Time to take a closer look at our top 11! It would take some sort of seismic event for Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche, or Casey James to go home. Only slightly less shocking would be the elimination of Lee Dewyze. All of those five will likely keep their seats on the couch warm.

No argument on that front.

Andrew Garcia is one contestant that we disagree on to a certain extent. I think he’s fading fast – faster as the weeks go on. He may have peaked too soon. David, you think he still has a strong fan base out there?

I think at this point, his fan base is stronger than his performances have been. Also, there is enough other cannon fodder to allow him to stick around for at least a few more weeks. But he had better pick it up because his star definitely has dimmed quite a bit.

I think Didi Benami and Paige Miles are still trying to find their footing. Didi is closer to finding it than Paige. I actually liked her “Playing With Fire,” at least in comparison to everything else I’ve heard from her since Hollywood. Paige had laryngitis last week, and maybe sympathy votes kept her from going home instead of Lacey. In my Ranking the Idols article, I said it’s time for Paige to go for broke. The sands of her hourglass are quickly disappearing, and she needs to pull a Kimberley Locke-like save.

I agree with the first part of your sentence there. That is, it’s time for Paige to go. Just go, period. She should have been gone before the finals! Will she? Well, that would be jumping ahead.

Rolling Stones week went pretty well for the two contestants I defied to name five Stones songs! I was flat-out impressed with Aaron Kelly’s “Angie.” It was the first time I have ever felt like he could actually win this competition. Emphasis on could. Wow. Even with that emphasis, I don’t see how it’s even remotely possible! I just never got Katie Stevens until “Wild Horses,” where I heard something like a compelling voice. I thought the judges were putting me on with their comments on her before now!

Tim Urban is in real trouble. I know he was the first go back to the couch in the bottom three, which suggests he was the highest vote-getter of the three (but not necessarily so). Assuming he was, if Paige returns to her Hollywood form, she can easily beat him, which means he is in the proverbial hot seat, doesn’t it?

He’s been in the hot seat (sharing it with Paige, really) since the semi-finals began. At some point, the sympathy vote for him has to run out. I’m hoping it’s soon.

So, that brings the question to the front – can Paige return to the Hollywood form that had Simon calling hers the best voice in the competition? My gut is telling me it can. If Paige can make smarter song choices and the themes lean in her favor, she could last a while. I’m not even putting her in the bottom three this week. In my bottom three are Katie, Tim, and Andrew; this is exactly what I predicted last week! But this week I feel better about it. And, as I said last week, it will be auf wiedersehen to Tim Urban.

Once again, I will disagree on Andrew – no way he’s in the bottom three… yet. And I’ll do likewise with Paige. I may still be underestimating her fan base (which I still can’t figure out!) but I think without the laryngitis sympathy vote, she’ll be in the bottom. I don’t think she will continue to make smarter song choices, which is one of her problems.

As for Tim, his inclusion at the bottom is a no-brainer at this point. So who else will be there? I’m going with Katie. She showed us something last week, but I don’t think she can do it two weeks running.

So who is leaving us? I’ve got to go with Tim. Maybe it’s just my fervent hope, but as I said earlier, sympathy for him has to drop off at some point. I’m hoping this is that point.
