American Idol 9, February 25 Recap: Four Down, 13 Weeks to Go

by Tyler Sandersfeld -- 02/26/2010
The good news: last year's top guy and girl (right) come back for performances, one of them especially for the cause in Haiti. The bad news: they kick every one of this year's contestants to the curb. The worse news: four of those contestants won't be coming back.

On Tuesday, 12 ladies tried to impress us. Few did. On Wednesday, 12 men tried to impress us. Fewer did. Only four of these aspiring superstars won't be able to aspire anymore. This is not just a travesty. This... is American Idol!

Let's remind ourselves of this week's bloodbath, starting with ladies' night. Paige Miles started the episode with many people predicting her end; Ashley Rodriguez tackled Leona Lewis without much success; Janell Wheeler joined the ranks of many denim skirts of the past; Lilly Scott sounded like an angel in comparison; Katelyn Epperly made Iowa look proud and sort of skanky; Haeley Vaughn divided the nation with her pop-country take on the Beatles; Lacey Brown united the nation in disapproval; Michelle Delamor had a good debut, if not noteworthy; Didi Benami wanted us to like her for the way she is; Siobhan Magnus surprised most viewers in a good way; Crystal Bowersox played two instruments and impressed many viewers; and Katie Stevens ended the show by being just okay.

As for the men, it wasn't pretty. Todrick Hall disemboweled "Since U Been Gone"; Aaron Kelly made a move to country that seemed to work; Jermaine Sellers discombobulated "Get Here"; Tim Urban had to apologize after "Apologize"; Joe Muńoz existed, as far as I know; Tyler Grady tried too hard to teleport back to the '70s; Lee Dewyze channeled Nickelback, to our delight or disgust; John Park did something; Michael Lynche had fun being mediocre; Alex Lambert disintegrated "Wonderful World"; Casey James actually sang well; and Andrew Garcia also had problems not disappointing the entire world.

Ryan says people have been saying Simon was harsher than normal this week. Simon disagrees because he's just trying to be honest. He says some performances just weren't very good. Some? Ellen found surprises in her first week, especially with that banana thing. Oh, Ellen, you're not the only person who has said something stupid about bananas. She knew there would be nerves, and she cares about the contestants. Randy knows the first week is always rough, especially since four will find the end of their journeys. Kara's husband is in the audience.

The top 24 sing together on "American Boy." The girls start in trios, and it sounds like they are lip synching. At least they sound okay. The trios of guys follow them. They're not good, even when recorded. This is going to be a long season unless the top 20 bring it on like Donkey Kong.

The results start with the girls. The back row stands up, and Siobhan gets the first results. She's safe, thanks to her refreshing talent. Haeley may have turned off a lot of voters, but she turned enough on to stick around. Michelle gave a good vocal, but not much excitement. The vocal was enough to keep her around, and I hope she becomes more interesting. My home girl Katelyn got high marks for the song but low for the makeover. She also gets the chance to ditch the lipstick.

That leaves Katie and Janell, one of whom is leaving. We know the pimp spot never gets eliminated, so barring a bizarre outcome, Janell is heading back to her quarterback lover. And I am... right. That makes my prediction of Paige and Ashley wrong, but I'm not at all sorry. Janell had a feeling she made the wrong song choice. She knows she messed up in Hollywood, and she wanted the chance to play guitar again. Janell makes the call for a girl winner. Here comes her "What About Love" reprise. It's still not good, but the bye is.

So five ladies just survived a round of cuts. Now, a young lady who survived many of them comes back for a guest performance. Allison Iraheta with "Scars." Last season's top female gives a nice performance of a nice song. There are no hooks in the song, so I doubt this will chart. Allison greets Ryan with the promise of another awkward interview. She's glad she's not in the shoes of this year's contestants, because she still feels she could be eliminated.

Back to the contestants. Paige sounded good, but went first and wasn't memorable. She earned a lot of predictions to go home, but none of them were right. Lacey had a really rough time this week, so her punishment is one more performance next week. [Associate editor's note: I think you mean OUR punishment.] On to Lilly Scott, who gave a nice performance of a song not many people know. They knew the performance enough to save her. Crystal got the best reviews of the night, so obviously she's safe.
