American Idol 9: Which Idols Will Fall in the First Semi-Final Round?by Sting7 & David Bloomberg -- 02/23/2010
View Printable version of this article Another season, another series of brilliant, insightful, and doomed to ruin predictions! I can hardly wait! So much so, David and I decided to kick things off early. You see, we would usually wait until the top 12 to share our “expertise” in making predictions about who will be voted off of American Idol But, this year, we looked each other in the eye and said, “What the heck!” Oscar Levant once said, “There is a thin line between genius and insanity.” Welcome to that line! Surely it is madness to predict what’s going to happen while the ink is barely dry on the list of the top 24. But if we get this right, we will just as surely proclaim ourselves geniuses! Our own respective happy dances could go on for days! Before there can be any dancing, we have work to do. Just as a reminder (or as new information for those reading this column for the first time), the plain text is Sting7 speaking; the red text is David. Being the gentleman that we are, we shall begin with the ladies. As usual, this kind of decision is made via the process of elimination. Based on the shows leading up to this point and the resulting buzz generated, some people can feel assured that they definitely have the backing to make it through week one. I would say the ladies wielding that kind of power, at this point anyway, are Crystal Bowersox, Katie Stevens, Lilly Scott, and… that’s it. If there is a favorite at this point, it’s Crystal. Let’s see if she lives up to the billing. Katie Stevens seems to have captured younger viewers and their grandmas. Lilly is bringing enough edge to capture this season’s “rocker girl” casting. Rocker girls have never won, maybe this is the year! What do you think David? I’m not quite as high on Crystal just yet, but I have to admit my interest waned somewhat through the long weeks of auditions and Hollywood. I do agree that she is safe, as well as Lilly – if only because Lilly is so visually memorable. However, I also think Haeley Vaughn is safe for at least the first week. I know you have quite a different opinion of her than I do, which you’ll get into momentarily, but I think she will have to disprove herself while many of the others are trying to prove themselves. So that leaves me nine potential evictees. Among them, there are the PSBs – the Pretty Singing Blondes. Seriously, I can’t truly tell Didi Benami from Katelyn Epperson from Janell Wheeler. (Pssst. Katelyn has wavy hair. Otherwise, I agree.) Siobhan Magnus was once blonde I think (we didn’t see a lot of her), but now has gone for a cute, short, chestnut brown haircut. At this stage, you want to stand out from the pack. Simon has warned against contestants he can barely tell apart. I’m a fan of Didi’s voice even if I can’t identify her in a police lineup (she is the one singing in honor of her deceased friend). The back story will help her. I also was impressed with Siobhan’s strong vocals skills. I think vocal strength alone will get her through to another week. I agree on both counts, but I also think Janell showed herself to be good enough to make it through this week. Then there is Haeyley Vaughn, who has yet to be seen without a flower in her hair (of natural origin or otherwise) and who David mentioned earlier. Ironically, Haeley is probably the most unique of the women. We don’t need a flower to know who she is – I’m just not sure she’s actually good. Did they slip a likeable Tatiana in on us? Did I really just say “likeable Tatiana?” Isn’t that like “military intelligence?” I kid. Special and unique, sure. I can see that. Consistent with the vocals? Not so much. Just to add to what I said earlier, I don’t think we can really judge vocal consistency yet at this stage. But we’ll find out soon enough! There is a Denim Skirt named Ashley Rodriguez. (“Denim Skirts” are so named for the many, many ladies at this stage of the competition known to be pretty girls with pretty voices wearing denim skirts. It was the most notable thing about them, sadly.) Ashley’s voice, from what we’ve seen, is nicey-good, but I am waiting to be moved. Lacey Brown is finally getting her shot in the top 24 after being passed over for quirky Meghan Joy last year. I wish they gave us more to be excited about/for her. We got even less of the gorgeous Michelle Delamor, who was like a hostess in the top 24 results room: hugging happy contestants and serving refreshments, I guess. And speaking of “What happened to my air time?” who on earth is Paige Miles? We saw her looking for a group in Hollywood… and suddenly she was in the top 24! Okay, we did see she was a part of Neapolitan, but all we heard from her in the group was “rah rah oh mah mah.” Hard to build an opinion off that! I don’t really have anything to add to what Sting said here. I do recall Ashley somewhat, but not a whole lot. The others… well, they just didn’t stick in my head much, I guess. 1 2 3 Next-->View Printable version of this article
