The NGH Report – American Idol 9’s Hollywood Week, Round 3: “Man in the Mirror”

by Joseph Banks -- 02/17/2010
Tuesday night’s American Idol both narrowed the field from three rooms to two and then began the process of selecting and revealing the semi-final 24. Which of the favorites continued chugging along? Who did we meet for the first time? And why does Joseph think Aaron Kelly (right) is not ready for primetime?

Wow! The introduction Tuesday night certainly felt more artistic and adult. Didn’t it? It felt like they were taking the show seriously as a beacon for opportunity and— Oh, no wait, they did the stupid “three rooms” trick again. I’m very confused. How do these contestants not already know what’s happening? There’s always one contestant who is just awesome in Hollywood Week. Take a look around. Is she next to you? She is? Congratulations; stop panicking. Here’s another tip. Did you hear one room cheer? You did? If it takes the judges very little time to come to your room after that… it’s bad news.

I mean, I’m no detective, but I think if I’m sitting next to Katie Stevens or Andrew Garcia, I’m feeling pretty strong about my chances.

Anyway, there really wasn’t much to write about tonight. It felt very procedural.

Angela Martin was featured knocking her audition out of the park and Jermaine Sellers was shown being a diva after he threw the band under the bus. Seriously. Jermaine showed a side of him that I never want to see again. I really wanted to slap him across the face. Casey James showed some clever musical interpretation with his cover of “Bubbly” and Lee Dewyze crowed out a little ditty.

There were still plenty of contestants that we haven’t seen since their initial audition and it’s starting to irk me. They just started to feature Siobhan Magnus (I finally know how to say her name – it’s awesome) more this week even though I’m pretty sure she is a clone of the character Six from Blossom. Crystal Bowersox was a mean singing machine. Her last audition of Hollywood Week was stellar. Crystal has a bit of a throwback style to her voice but her confidence is practically unmatched so far this season, though she still had the teeth of a pirate.

Alex Lambert had the balls to do not one, but both of his auditions during Hollywood Week while playing a terribly tuned ukulele. Well, kudos to him for taking risks? Part of me wanted to see him advance but the other part of me knew that the other Wildcats would need him for their upcoming basketball game. Michael Lynche continued to make his way through each round even if his voice was just average in this episode. There’s something lovable about the big ol’ goof. There’s also something terrifying about the prospect of angering him. I mean, I know what happens when you get Bruce Banner mad. He turns into the Hulk. Well… what happens when you get the Hulk mad? That’s right. That’s my fear with Big Mike.

Todrick Hall showed off his vocal gymnastics and Thaddeus Johnson was another young contestant who looked like he should be playing the funny overweight friend on a Disney channel production.

Mary Powers, not to be outdone in the “diva arena,” managed to sound arrogant and idiotic at the same time. Not an easy feat – especially after her performance, which had no breath support and sounded worse than the noise burning flesh makes. Hope Johnson was so off-key she was practically singing a different song. If you’ll remember, this was the young girl who was really poor. Well, her family better start stealing the little soaps and shampoos from the hotel bathroom because I don’t see how Hope Johnson makes it much further.

Aaron Kelly apparently forgot his words in two out of three of his Hollywood Week auditions. That’s inexcusable. The kid is not ready for primetime. I respect the fact that he stuck with it and recovered but they needed to make an example out of him. They didn’t. Bad decision.

Ashley Rodriguez, on the other hand, was very confident, and even though her voice isn’t that strong, she is practically made to go into a studio right now and lay down a great pop track. Unfortunately, she was an awful dancer. She moved across the stage like a woman four times her weight. Joe Munoz was… uhh… who? Haeley Vaughn continued to blast that big unique voice straight at the judges’ faces. She’s been running strong in this competition.

Tori Kelly and Lilly Scott also managed to impress the judges in their final rounds. I’m just impressed that I can write about them without making fun of the fact that they both have first names for their last names. Andrew Garcia gave a performance that wasn’t quite as stellar as his previous ones, but still strong.

The rooms went just like I expected them to; the first one was in, the second was out, and the third was in. Shocking! For the first time in Idol history, we learned who a few of the semi-finalist contestants would be on the same night that they were rattled down to about fifty remaining contestants. So without further ado…

Michael Lynche, a very very nice guy, was the first contestant to make it into the top 24. Were we surprised? The camera was always on him and he was a crowd favorite. Didi Benami is probably one of the strongest girls in the competition and was the first girl to make it to the semi-finals. She was adorable and modest as she thanked the judges. Katelyn Epperly also made it to the semi-finals, though I still had a big problem with her using divorce as a “back story.” It’s not. It happens to a lot of families and doesn’t make you stand out.

Casey James was also through to the next round. The guy who was quiet and speechless throughout the whole week suddenly erupted into a lunatic who couldn’t stop screaming. Kara’s crush on Casey managed to get even creepier, if that’s even possible, and she was one step closer to a Paula Abdul style controversy. We can only cross our fingers and hope! Aaron Kelly, the boy who is not ready for this competition, was also put through. He screamed like a little girl. That’s all I have to say. Lee Dewyze looked so high I’m surprised he even knew where he was, but Lee has entered the semi-finals! Todrick Hall was the last contestant we saw make it to the next round tonight in a very anti-climactic fashion.

The show had a weird pace Tuesday night and Wednesday we will find out the other contestants who will be rounding out the top 24. See you then!
