American Idol 9 Contestants to Watch from Hollywood, Day 2by David Bloomberg -- 02/11/2010
View Printable version of this article Wednesday night brought us what Ryan Seacrest called “dreaded group night.” Let me tell you, it is not just dreaded by contestants, but by me as well. I hate it. You think that’s too strong a word? I don’t. Being in a group has nothing to do with American Idol (unless you count it as what RNO co-writer Heather Fidler suggested, “To prepare for those hideous group numbers on Results Night?”). All they want here is drama, but that drama can actually knock out a good individual singer! Stepping down from my soapbox, let’s go through our usual route of discussing the featured singers who made it through and comparing them to my previous list of who I thought would make it past Hollywood. It’s difficult to follow the usual format for this episode because, well, the episode doesn’t follow the usual format! But we’ll do our best. As a reminder, I have not looked at any spoilers. Yes, I know the list is out there and somebody even e-mailed it to me, but I deleted it without looking. I’m sure I’ll be wrong enough to make that clear! Charity Vance, Ashley Rodrigquez, and Michelle Delamor were all just okay but nothing special in my opinion. And yet they all made it through. None of them were on my original list to progress past Hollywood or in my updates after the first day of Hollywood, and I still stand by that. Big Mike sounded smooth, Seth Rollins did too. Tim Urban sounded decent as well. But only two of those three made it forward, with Seth being left behind. Also out from this group was Michael Castro, Jason’s brother, but we didn’t get to hear him. I had a feeling Tim would make it because otherwise he wouldn’t have been featured the day before, and Tim didn’t cause any drama, which was my original prediction. So I’m thinking now he’ll make the semi-finals. What about Mike? I’m on the fence. Thaddeus Johnson and Jessica Cunningham sounded decent from their group. All of them went through, but I had only predicted the former. Will Jessica join him? Eh, I don’t think so. It’s hard for me to say much about the group with Theri, Siobhan, etc. They all made it but we saw more drama than singing from them. I’m up in the air here. Tori Kelly was okay, Maddie Penrose didn’t sound great despite what Seacrest said, Mark Labriola and Kimberly Kerbow forgot the words and that was it for them. I had predicted Kimberly might have enough in her to make the semi-finals, but apparently the correct words were not part of what was in her. I have no real updates in my predictions here – we just didn’t see enough of those who made it through! (I guess that’s another reason for me to hate group day!) Hey, a girl named Kat quit because she knew she’d mess up. What?! That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. “I might get cut, so I’ll quit and avoid it.” Good thing she got out now before she heard actual criticism. In the next group, whomever remembered the words made it through. That included Jermaine Sellers, who was the only one to sound good from this bunch, and Jeff Goldford, who didn’t. I will stick with my prediction that Jermaine makes the semi-finals. I don’t know what happened to ex-con Matt Lawrence, but I had pegged him as a finalist! So much for that. See, I told you I don’t read the spoilers! As Simon said about this group, “it was so horrific.” We also said goodbye to a number of contestants I hadn’t predicted to go forward, so I’ll ignore them. But among that bunch was Dave Pittman, whom I had picked for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, we don’t know what happened to him since we didn’t see him. Janell Wheeler was good, as I expected her to be after I moved her into my semi-finals picks due to her day one performance in Hollywood. Jermain Purifoy also sounded good, solidifying my original “maybe” into more of a lock for the semi-finals. Yesterday, I said I might have to add Casey James to my semi-finals list. He sounded pretty good in his group, but he looked uncomfortable on stage. Leaning towards semi-finals but still a little iffy for me. As Ryan Seacrest said, Andrew Garcia stood out. I originally had him as a “maybe” finalist, but now I’m locking that in. Katie Stevens was similarly a “maybe” semi-finalist and she sounded good as well, so she’s now a definite. J.B. Ahfua was pretty smooth, but not enough for me to add him to my prediction list. As for the most drama-prone group, did Mary (over)Power the others? Why was she laughing when she was singing? Hope Johnson was too quiet. Alex Lambert was pretty blah. Mary, Hope, and Alex made it, but I don’t hold out high hopes for anybody but Mary. I didn’t originally pick her to make it through Hollywood, but then yesterday I added her to the roster. I’m going to stay with that. Of the others we didn’t see, we were told that John Park (one of my semi-finalist picks), Haeley Vaughn (a finalist pick), Angela Martin (semi-finalist pick), Tasha Layton (semi-finalist pick), Tyler Grady (semi-finalist pick), Katelyn Epperly (potential finalist pick), Lloyd Thomas (not on my list), Keia Johnson (not on my list), and Christian Spear (semi-finalist pick). Obviously, I can’t make any changes to the list based on Seacrest just reading off the names. Now you can follow Foxes On Idol & RealityNewsOnline on Twitter and on Facebook!
