American Idol 9, February 9 Recap: It’s a New Dawn, It’s a New Day…Page 2View Printable version of this article Ellen plays around with a few people, telling them to step forward, back, and to the side before telling them they’re all going through. Heh. Todrick Hall, Charity Vance, and Ashley Rodriguez are all sticking around, along with 43 others. But there’s another group to go through this… The next day. Simon tells the singers that this could be the most important day of their lives. But don’t be nervous! Or boring. Or forgetful. Jay Stone, the beatboxer, does his thing, but it’s not as well-received as it was before. Lilly Scott got a unanimous vote to Hollywood after her original audition, but we’re meeting her for the first time. She does “Lullaby of Birdland” with her guitar. She’s good, if kind of old-fashioned. Kara finds her refreshing and unique, though. Lilly’s staying in Hollywood and Jay is going home. Michael Lynche’s wife’s water just broke. He wants to be there for the birth, obviously, but he’s going to stay. He tells the judges that his wife wouldn’t be happy if he didn’t come home with a victory. He’ll also pummel anyone who disagrees. Heh. Michael plays guitar and sings “Waiting on the World to Change.” He’s another singer who can make a song his own. The audience really likes him. So does Simon, which is more important. “It’s a good day,” Simon tells him. Michael celebrates, then heads off to check on his wife and baby. Justin Williams, the cancer survivor from the Boston auditions, is up next. So is a guy named Tim Urban, who’s new to us. Simon didn’t like him that much at his Dallas audition. Tim plays guitar and sings David Cook’s “Come Back to Me.” He’s okay. It’s not the best song for him. Simon looks bored. Kara says the chorus was shaky but he was okay. Justin plays keyboard and warbles something. Not very good. Randy says it was “interesting.” Oh, that’s not good either. Justin’s out, Tim’s in. Also out: Paige Dechausse (of the asthma), Erica Rhodes (Barney’s dominatrix), and Amanda and Bernadette Desimone (Jersey sisters). Maddy Curtis, the very first person we saw get through this season, sings… something. I don’t know. It’s too old-fashioned. Simon tells her it was definitely the wrong song for her. She hopes to do better next time. Yeah, if there is a next time. Casey James (Kara and Victoria’s dress-up doll from Denver) plays guitar and sings John Mayer’s “I Don’t Need No Doctor” like a country song. I like him a lot better here than I did in his original audition. Randy thinks he sounds like a real singer/songwriter. We don’t get to hear the verdict, but Casey runs out of the room cheering, so he’s in. Maddy’s out. Her mom points out that she’s only 16, so she has, like, 14 more years to do this. The last line is ready to go. Didi Benami, who’s pursuing music for her best friend, is in this line. She’s singing one of Kara’s songs, “Terrified,” and accompanying herself on guitar. She sounds very nice. I just still don’t know if she’s going to be able to get through this competition. Simon reluctantly admits that he likes the song. He thinks it sounds current. He also likes the idea of a waitress like Didi coming on the show and doing well. Crystal Bowersox, who we briefly saw in Chicago, is a single mom who recently got a tattoo of her son’s name (Anthony) on her back. She wants to give him a better life. Crystal plays guitar and sings “Natural Woman.” Wow, she’s 24? She looks younger. She’s really good. I liked the little bit we saw of her in Chicago, so I’m glad she’s still around. She gets the audience and judges singing along with her, which is awesome. Okay, she’s now my second-favorite singer this season. Simon tells Crystal that she’s infectious and people like her, so she has a head start. She’s real. In the least surprising news of the evening, Didi and Crystal are both staying in Hollywood. Round one of Hollywood Week was good for 97 people. Tomorrow Tyler will take you through the next round – groups! Pop some popcorn, because there will be DRAMA.
