American Idol 9 Contestants to Watch from Denverby David Bloomberg -- 02/03/2010
View Printable version of this article The Mile-High city actually brought out some talent! By now I’m sure you know the drill – in this column, I discuss the contestants who we see making it through to Hollywood and predict how far they will go (or if they will go) from there. Remember that I have not read any spoiler material that might be out there, so all of my predictions are solely based on what I see and hear on the TV. Like the on-site judges, I thought Mark Labriola was going to be one of the bad auditions, especially with the humorous lead-in Simon gave him regarding his whole background. But he surprised us all with some smoooooth vocals, making it to Hollywood. He doesn’t have a very good look, but his vocals more than make up for it. Still, the question is whether he can make it through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to say no. Kimberly Kerbow has a precious little girl and a sweet voice. She went off in the wrong direction with her lyrics about Rogaine aimed at Simon, but she was lucky they all took it humorously. Her personality might just put her over the top and let her stick around. Semi-finals? Maybe. Just maybe. Danelle Hayes certainly has a powerful voice – almost too loud, frankly. She is another mother of a young child (that seemed to be the theme of the night) and has a semi-decent “corporate hell” back story. With all the emotion, though, I don’t think there is any way she will make it through Hollywood hell week. Casey James isn’t a single dad (as far as we know) but he had a good back story in the form of his accident (mind you, it’s not good that he was injured, but you know what I mean), and the female judges liked his look. But even Kara said he needs to work on his voice and personality. His looks won’t get him through Hollywood – in fact, nothing will. Tori Kelly caught the judges’ attention with her little helper, Hope. But she kept their attention with her voice. Well, she kept the attention of most of them – Simon not included. To me, she was okay. I don’t see her making it through to the semi-finals. Nicci Nix flew quite a long distance… and I don’t think it was worth it. Eh. I can’t see her making it past Hollywood. Haeley Vaughn was born premature and her dad died when she was young. Both are good sob stories but will only be meaningful if she can make it to the semi-finals and she can sing. Wait, she wants to sing country? That should be interesting if she does make it, since country singers historically do well, but those have usually been, well, somewhat blonder. But as Simon noted, she stood out. Plus, she did have a pretty good voice (for a country singer). I think she’ll make the semi-finals and maybe even the finals. Even though there were only seven successful auditioners shown, it seemed like more because we weren’t assaulted by the usual huge number of bad singers. The producers still provided humor breaks in the form of the short bits on angry contestants and those who came dressed in wacky outfits, plus a few bad singers, but we didn’t have to listen to the usual huge number, which made this a better overall episode.
