I’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 6 Finale

by Terri Smith --
It was performance finale night for So You Think You Can Dance, meaning our Foxes On Idol judge’s last chance to tell us what she thought about everybody – dancers, judges, choreographers, the works! Did the finale live up to her high standards? Did the results fall in line with how she thought it would and should go? Find out right here!

Sorry for the late posting everybody, but I wanted to make sure to include not only my thoughts about the final performance episode, but regarding the results as well! I was pretty excited to see some awesome performances from new couples so as I prepared to sit down and watch, I hoped the night didn’t disappoint. I still was not sure how I felt about a six-person finale, but I was determined to keep an open mind, because I was able to see Ashleigh & Ryan, Ellenore & Jakob, and Kathryn & EVERYONE.

I was commiserating with you all about how disappointed I was that I didn’t have a season six boyfriend, and one of my readers came up with a genius plan. Declare a Dance girlfriend instead! Since I absolutely love Kathryn, the decision was easy after that. So ladies and gentlemen, Kathryn is my So You Think You Can Dance season 6 girlfriend! My word, so much excitement and the routines haven’t even started yet. The rest of the night better be great. Let’s see for ourselves, shall we? Let’s get it on!

Kathryn & Ryan – samba

Okay, how cool did the beginning of the routine look with them all dimly let so all we could see were Kathryn lines and bare-chested Ryan? I jumped when the music picked up, but I loved how crazy into it they got. These two and Latin routines are absolutely amazing! I can’t believe how much chemistry these two portray. Who woulda figured! I was impressed that even though everything was shaking like crazy and moving really quickly, they still looked precise in their movements. It wasn’t just a bunch of flailing. I was not crazy about Kathryn’s whole tribal-looking outfit, but everything else about this routine was awesome.

Ellenore & Jakob – Broadway

I absolutely love this song!! These two did a great job of capturing the energy and sex appeal that this routine called for. I had no idea Ellenore was so flexible. Of course, Jakob jumped like a crazy man, but he also did a good job of infusing the style of this routine into him doing his own thing (Nigel and I came up with that at the same time). I liked this a lot and Ellenore did look fantastic.

Ashleigh & Russell – lyrical jazz

Welcome back, Ashleigh! I hope Ashleigh has more to do in this piece than she did in the other lyrical jazz one from a couple weeks ago. I think Russell is absolutely the star of this, but it’s not like Ashleigh is just standing around. She was given more jazz moves to execute and she doid them well. It blows my mind how good Russell is in other genres. I mean, are you freaking kidding me? I agree with Mary that Ashleigh’s lines probably looked the best they’ve ever been on the show (in anything else but ballroom). She also gets really into her routines. No one can challenge her commitment to anything. Russell was indeed absolutely beautiful, though. Okay, three good routines in a row! I’m freaking out!

Ellenore & Ryan – jazz

Hmm… The routine was fine, I’m just not sure if it’s appropriate for the finale, you know? They were dancing well, but I don’t know if this showed off anything about them or if it would be really memorable in comparison to other stuff we’ve seen tonight. It did them a little bit of a disservice in the sense that it doesn’t show off their great chemistry, but I can’t deny the execution of the routine. They did a good job.

Ashleigh & Jakob – foxtrot

This is going to seem silly, but I was immediately intrigued when Ashleigh flicked her skirt out really wide. That color looks fantastic on her! I thought it was really good as far as foxtrots go. It was flirty and sassy, which is perfect for Ashleigh, but it was still very technical with lots of in-hold choreography so Jakob could show off how great of a partner he is. Quick shout to the choreographer, because I missed who it was: “Really cute routine, but quit pitting jetês in routines just so Jakob can jump!” While not spectacular (can a foxtrot be spectacular?), it was still a great showing.

Ellenore & Russell – paso doble

Wow, Ellenore had a quick change, didn’t she? Thank God for commercial breaks! Oooh, this was such a spectacle! They both looked fantastic and I would normally never buy Russell as this dominating matador because he’s such a sweetheart, but he sure owned his character! I knew the theatrics would work wonders for Ellenore and she had a really great tango earlier in the show. I wasn’t crazy about the silhouette at the beginning but everything else was fantastic. Russell did a ronde de jambe! He may have a lot to explain when he gets home, but he just might have 250,000 friends going with him that can do all the talkin’.

Kathryn & Jakob – contemporary

This just isn’t fair! Two excellent contemporary dancers doing contemporary? Good luck, everyone else! And to such a good song!! Oh. My. God! That was absolutely beautiful. And I’m not just saying that because Kathryn’s my new girlfriend, but it’s arguably one of the best contemporary routines of the entire season, which is saying a lot with the likes of Travis and Sonya putting out great routines. This was wonderful. While I was getting a little annoyed with all the Jakob jumps after a while, I almost didn’t want to stop the genius that is Jakob doing his own style. Not only was he technically superb, he also showed amazing chemistry. He looked completely obsessed with Kathryn, which is exactly what the routine called for, and Kathryn was freaking stunning! I love when they have her do extensions in routines. I could watch her lines forever. It also helps that these two can exude chemistry with a dictionary. Together, in this piece, they were unstoppable.
