I’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 6, December 1

by Terri Smith --
Terri’s back to judge once again, and it’s a great time to do so because the couples have split and been reshuffled. Which pairings earn high marks? Which make her feel sorry for one partner or the other (hint at right)? And what does she have to say about the choreographers and on-site judges? Read on to find out!

We’re at the top 10, people! I apologize for not joining you for last week’s top 12, but I appreciate those of you who told me what went on (and Jenn’s recap, of course). Tonight and tomorrow will be interesting because we see who has the real fan bases and who just so happened to be partnered with them. Hopefully we’ll get some fantastic routines from cool new partnerships. I’m excited for what’s in store. By now, you’ve read Jenn’s recap from this week, so without further ado, let’s get it on!

Oh, readers. Here’s a blast from the past. My DVR hates me again today, so if I miss any performances, I apologize. If I don’t mention it, assume it’s lost from me forever.

Noelle & Ryan – hip-hop

I don’t see these two as very hip-hoppy. The whole thing seemed really low-energy. They did a good job with the performance and playing their characters, but I wasn’t blown away by the actual dancing. They never looked tired, but I was waiting for some rev in the music where they’d really get into it, but it just didn’t happen. While I don’t hate it, I’m not impressed.

Ashleigh & Legacy – contemporary

When I heard that these two were doing contemporary, I made a face of concern. I think it helped these two that this routine isn’t very lyrical. The music seemed like something Legacy would work well with. They both have a good “intense face,” and I don’t know why I’m not loving this routine. I mean, the routine’s fine and the dancers aren’t doing anything wrong, but there are times when it seems like a total mess. They need to work on their extension. When they need to hit a certain pose at a certain point, it needs to be really clear what they need to look like. I’ll side with Nigel that they get the A for effort. I’m just giving a B- for execution.

Mollee – I feel like I’m really bad at judging solos, so I ask you bear with me. Mollee’s hair is really cute tonight and I’m jealous of her body. Goodness, these girls are beautiful! I liked her solo. She did a good job of not looking so frantic, yet she had moments where she showed her flexibility, turns, and leaps. I’m not blown away by how amazing it was since it was still so juvenile (because she is one – practically), but she should be pleased with herself. Good job!

Russell – I had no clue what I’m looking at, but I know I loved it. He has pretty outstanding musicality. I’d put it up there with Twitch. He’ll need to make sure to constantly show things that we’ve never seen before. It helps that he and Legacy have completely different styles under the hip-hop umbrella. I liked this one a lot, but in the future, I hope he does BIG stuff!

Kathyrn & Nathan – Broadway

Ugh! Why did she have to get paired with Nathan? I was a little concerned for my Kathryn because the last time she did a Broadway routine, she was accused of being immature, but I thought she did a great job with this. The dance itself was a little corny, but she did a good job of still being herself while she was dancing. I think it helped that we saw her be completely sexilicious last week. I side with the judges that she did wonderful! I wasn’t really paying attention to Nathan because I don’t like him and want him gone. I mean, look at that look that was on his face while the judges talked. Can you at least look like you understand what’s going on? I rewound the routine because I figured that I should actually comment on something, and he did fine. Not amazing, not engaging, fine. “Whatever” to Nathan. “Wonderful!!” to Kathryn.

Noelle – There were things I loved and there were things I was not pleased about. Her arms were really manic while she danced. She just kinda threw them out there with big jazz hands and it made her look really babyish. I’m cool with joyful abandon, but let’s reign it in. I loved when she was on her knees and rolled over into a cartwheel. That was really cool, and I love her control while she was doing her turns with her legs in the splits. She bobbled a little bit, but not enough to make anyone mad at her. I want to see a little more refinement, but I was fine with it overall.

Ellenore & Jakob – quickstep

The quickstep. Really? I apologize for this. I have a fiery hatred for the quickstep but I’m also frustrated that I don’t know how to properly judge this since I don’t know what I’m looking at. I know they’re not supposed to separate like that, so Len Goodman would be having a cow (serves him right, the old geezer). But honestly, what’s supposed to be going on? They’re moving really fast but only on the bottom. I thought they had good posture and looked cute, but I don’t know if they did it technically well or not.

Ryan – I hate ballroom solos, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the dancer. While I’m not usually blown away by Ryan’s dancing, he clearly is supposed to have someone else dancing with him. Readers, I need your help. Is Ryan the first guy ballroom dancer to make the top 10? Wait… Benji. Damn, I thought I had a discovery. I think Ryan absolutely did the best he could within the limitations of his style. Was it an amazing solo? No, but it was the best one I’ve seen of his, which is what the judges wanted. I’m pleased with his efforts tonight. Good job!

Kathryn – Kathryn’s mom is beautiful! (I said that before Cat.) I thought this solo was also beautiful, but I might be biased because I love Kathryn. Her lines were incredible, and she did a good job of trying to incorporate unique choreography into her own style, but I love how she dances. While Noelle’s joyful abandon looks out of control, Kathryn’s is so powerful because you can see it in every move she makes because she’s so controlled. I’ve never seen this girl look in over her head. I want to do one of those stupid emoticon hearts for her: <3
