I’ll Be the Judge of That! – So You Think You Can Dance 6, November 10by Terri Smith --
View Printable version of this article With each passing week, I’m warming up to this season. Yeah, I haven’t declared a Dance boyfriend, and no one’s stood out to me as someone who just might win it all, but it’s still early. Right? I will continue to shake off my funk about this season and go into tonight excited about seeing some potentially excellent dancing (hopefully with no Paula)! By now you’ve read Jenn’s recap. So without further ado, let’s get it on! What the hell are Ashleigh’s pants>?! What are those?! She was walking a thin line with me, but she is fired. Freaking fired! Karen & Kevin – hustle Okay, this wasn’t nearly as terrible as I thought it’d be. I thought it’d be really disco-y, but my gag reflex wasn’t provoked, which is always a plus. Did anyone else think it was a little boring? I thought they were cute together for the first time probably ever. Karen was great as always, because she’s used to working with a partner and being sexy isn’t a far cry for her. I thought Kevin was fine. This is a breakthrough for him, since I’m not a Kevin fan in the slightest. I acknowledge that he did a jete and a double-pirouette, but what he did to come out of such moves and others throughout the routine was painful. The nervous face during the death drops, clunky stops on turns, graceless jumps, major struggles lifting Karen. Once or twice I can forgive, but that often just irked me. Having said that, I do give him credit for doing a lot better than I thought he’d do. Ashleigh & Jakob – Viennese waltz (Before I talk dance, I have to say that Jakob pimping his friendship with Jeanine is strategically brilliant.) Readers, am I in a mood tonight or was this routine just okay (and so not as good as the table routine like Nigel said)? It was the best I’ve seen Ashleigh, and Jakob looked like he got really into it instead of appearing above it all. There were a couple ugly cane moments, but they covered them really well. I have a really critical eye when it comes to props so I was looking for screw-ups, therefore, I found some. Looking back on it, none of the errors were hugely noticeable, and that’s a great job to them for actually making it look like there was no mistake at all. I dwell on mistakes, they did perform this routine really well. They both pulled off that intense feeling that music like this calls for, and it was entertaining. Good job for them, but it doesn’t forgive Ashleigh’s pants from earlier. Pauline & Peter – quickstep (Peter’s volunteer work is really sweet. If he weren’t so full of himself (that stupid eyebrow thing) and apparently talking back to judges (!!), he’d be dance boyfriend material. By my own admission, I’m really bad at judging the quickstep, because I don’t quite know what I’m looking at. I get that the feet move quickly, but I’m not sure if feet should go heel-toe or toe-heel or land flat on the ground or what. There were moments where the legs looked like hot messes, so that’s probably when they did something wrong, but that’s the best I’ve got for technical stuff. Aside from that, these two were as cute as a button. Peter looks like he has a lot of fun when he dances, and Pauline seems like a really fun person, so together, they are FUN! Where’s the fun counter from last season? Oh, I miss Evan (so imagine my delight when I saw him in the audience!). Kathryn & Legacy – Broadway These two are officially my favorite couple! She was absolutely adorable (I used this word before the judges used it a dozen times), and I was concerned Legacy only had one dancing face, which was “INTENSE,” but he looked liked he had a lot of fun with this one even though he was completely out of his element. I was excited for how well he did. I understand the judges’ issues with the character Kathryn played being a little too childlike. I don’t think it helped that she looked like Lolita. Did anyone notice the huge bruise she had on her thigh? Anyway, I wasn’t let down by Kathryn at all but was pleasantly surprised by Legacy. Yay, favorite couple! Channing & Victor – contemporary First off, Channing looked gorgeous! This was really pretty, you guys! I loved how well they stopped and started the choreography, and Cat’s right about their chemistry. Goodness, gracious! They both did really well with getting into the performance. Yeah, they danced their style really well, but their faces were so intense and they completely sold the story. I mean, they threw themselves on the floor! Look back at it, they slam into the floor! I’ll look back at Nigel not feeling the emotional connection, but for now, I disagree. Ellenore & Ryan – hip-hop Did anyone else think “skiing” when you saw their outfits? If y’all just robbed a bank, perhaps you should look a little more incognito. (I said that before Adam! I really did!!) Okay, I watched for all the concerns regarding Ryan’s elusive swagger. If you have the show on DVR, watch Ryan’s face during this routine. He is so totally into this. I thought his dancing was still a little more upright than it should have been, but I’m not taking tonight away from him, because he did really well. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t pay attention to Ellenore that much because I was so busy watching Ryan. Where the judges felt let down wasn’t with these two, though. More to follow. Mollee & Nathan – salsa The beginning of the routine was really awkward, and I was afraid this routine was going to suck more than I wanted it to. Yuck. Mollee took the bull by the horns on taking on a sexy attitude goes. I thought she looked fantastic when she just posed and moved her hips, but she looked uncomfortable doing the actual choreography. Nathan was a complete mess. He was stiff, awkward, most of the hand placement errors were his fault, and completely uncool. You were not hot, Nathan. Not hot. Bummer. Noelle & Russell – Afro-jazz I couldn’t even type while I was watching, I just couldn’t help but watch as soon as they starting moving. I’m not going to lie, I thought Noelle was going to blow it, but that was awesome! Holy cow! I thought everything about this was freaking fabulous. Noelle was wonderful and Russell was wonderful, and there was nothing about that routine that wasn’t wonderful. I couldn’t tell you a single thing I was looking at. All I know is wow! 1 2 Next-->View Printable version of this article
