Bo Bice Recovering From Emergency Surgery

by Donna Reynolds -- 10/10/2006

According to an announcement posted on Bo Bice's official website on Monday, Bo is back in the hospital, recovering from emergency surgery.

Although bobice.com does not indicate where Bo is or the nature of his condition, MTV has posted a brief article in which they claim that Bo had the surgery last Thursday in a hospital in Nashville. MTV has identified Bo's condition as being the intestinal condition, intussusception, which usually results in an obstruction of the bowel. This condition is normally only diagnosed in children under two years old.

The announcement on Bo's site indicates that "the surgery was not easy or routine, and after a setback the following day, Bo is now recovering well under the supervision of his doctors and hospital staff." All of Bo's October tour dates have been cancelled, and it is not yet known when he will be able to get back out on the road.

Bo began having stomach problems while still competing on American Idol. During finale week in May, he was so sick that he was almost unable to perform. At the time, his problems were attributed to food poisoning, and Bo managed to perform despite feeling poorly. He continued having stomach problems, but these problems were overshadowed when he broke his foot during a show in Manchester, NH in July.

In August 2005, Bo was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital for emergency surgery after collapsing backstage just prior to the Idol concert. His recovery was expected to take at least six weeks, which meant that he would miss the remainder of the Idol 4 tour. But less than four weeks post-op, Bo was back on the stage for the final two shows in Syracuse, NY.

That fall, he performed at Bayfest and at a Katrina relief benefit, while at the same time, working on his CD. He made numerous appearances to promote the CD, including a TV special on the Oxygen network. But Bo continued to have problems, and in an interview during his CMT In the Moment, he said that the problem had not been corrected. He was hospitalized again in December 2005 after coughing up blood.

This summer as Bo toured the country promoting The Real Thing, he made several trips to hospital emergency rooms, once again, complaining of stomach pain. The surgery came after several rounds of tests and doctors deemed his condition serious enough to operate immediately.

All of us at Foxes on Idol send our best wishes to Bo and his family during this difficult time. Get well soon, Bo!
